What is "Earthlink's TotalAccess mailbox"?

How do you connect it to X1?

Have you tried the usual settings?

If it doesn't use local files, and relies on webmail, then I am amazed that you get X1 to index it at all.

Maybe you use Outlook.

Who knows?

Tell us more and maybe someone can answer.

How can I either turn off or set X1 indexing to happen less frequently in Earthlink's TotalAccess mailbox? It interrupts me way too often as I deal with emails - the email program locks up while the indexing occurs.

I seem to have difficulties with setting up the Skype plug-in as described in http://blog.x1.com/my_weblog/2007/08/demo-plugin-x1-.html

Step 3: "Add a source through Tools->Add Source ..." does not seem to work for me. What do I type into the "Location:" field?

According to the instructions, no Skype username or password is required.

What I am doing wrong?

It started OK and then fell over as I added more feed.

I wonder if there is a hole in one of those xml files that X1 seems to create.

I would suggest that we backtrack a version, but that wasn't up to much either.

Guess what? Yet more changes.

This time the preview pane has vanished. So I am back to seeing nothing.

But I can add the feeds.

The only thing I did to provoke this change of behaviour was to close X1 and restart it.

Where does X1 hold the information on the preview pane? I want to get it back.

I have been added sources to the X1WebServicePlugin.

This is in an attempt to recreate a set that broke because I had to reinstall X1. (It simply would not start, delivering an error message "The remote procedure call failed".)

All was going well until I managed to click on to the X1WebServicePlugin bit in Options.

X1 blew up. Asked for an email address and went off to send a report. Unfortunately, it also left X1 hung. Nothing could recover control. So I had to do it in task manager.

After the recovery, one of the sources seemed to be corrupt. Trying to use it created another crash. Once again, I had to close X1 with task manager.

It seems that previously indexed sources were corrupt. I had to clear and reindex them.

Is this Outlook?

Have you tried to see if there are problems with the PST file?

When anything starts to play up with Outlook it always helps to run "scanpst" until it reports no errors.

Not knowing which operating system you have, I can't tell you where scanpst resides. Search the archive there though and you should find some pointers.

Been using the program for years. Running Prof. Client Ver 6.21 build 3618.
No matter what changes i make, the email indexing stops around the 35% mark. I have it searching all the time and leave the machine on overnight.

Any thoughts?

You stand corrected, I sit bemused.

I updated to the new plugin. Now I can't see things in the preview pane.

It shows the status message "Receive data failed: mismatched tag".

http://www.sciencebusiness.com/wordpress/?cat=3&feed=rss2

Another couple show no status, but no body of the message either.

Doesn't seem to work in Vista.

Unfortunately, I haven't had time to follow this up with X1.

I have been taking regular snapshots of CPU use with Task Manager. Two seconds ago it was down to a few percent. Now it has gone back up to 30 to 40 per cent, which is where it usually sits.

I have various theories, related to the way my backup software alters time flags or how other software gets in the way.

But I have tried turning off everything else, to no effect.

Guess I should just wipe the idea and start again. After all, this has been going on for more than a month.

This was first requested in 2005, but the X1 guys have never answered to that thread. It's number three on the 'feature requests checklist', see http://forums.x1.com/viewtopic.php?t=3777 . As Kenward states, using Outlook itself to search for emails 'for follow-up' is the best option. I think this is possible at least since Outlook 2003, and works reasonably fast. -pgk

Is this with Outlook? If so, which version?

While I too use X1 for a lot of the finding, I also use Outlook's "Search Folders". The "For Follow Up" search may help.

Have you also checked out all of the various columns that you can add to an X1 display? Does the "Flag Text" column help in any way?

It can trace messages marked "Follow Up".

The "Flag" column seems to do nothing here.

Other columns and combinations may also help.

I use "Categories" lot. I use "Outlook Rules" to assign categories to email as it arrives.

Your question makes me think that someone, perhaps an X1 person, could write a brief guide to strategies for using X1 with Outlook.

Subject: Finding flagged emails?
Since purchasing X1, I have scrapped the old and tiresome technique of placing emails into different folders. Now everything stays in my inbox and I just use X1 to find things. Unfortunately, there does not seem to be a good way to search for the emails that require future action or reference outside of the typical search criteria like from, date, subject, etc.

My original thought was to flag emails with different colors and then search quickly for them with X1, but searching for flags does not seem to be a feature (unless I'm doing something wrong). It seems that X1 does not provide a way to search for outlook email that has been flagged. I found an old post requesting this feature, but apparently it has not been granted.

I'm looking for tips on how people use X1 in practice. I know I can use flags and search folders in outlook, but I want the speed of X1.

Any help would be appreciated.

I know the X1 "CPU Hog" thing is really annoying, but I hope everyone is also logging cases with X1 and providing info to them.

I've done so and I get the impression they are very keen to fix it, but they can't recreate it in any way.

If I didn't want to pay for a Search client, I'd probably go with Copernic. In fact, if it had a slightly better, less childish (my opinion) interface, I might use it fulltime.

But the power you get with X1 still seems unrivalled to me.

Hi,

We've got a new version of the RSS plugin that does a much better job of updating your RSS feed indexes.

1. Download the update here: http://www.x1.com/cs/X1WebServicesPlugin_chg17279.zip
2. Extract the .X1i file to your hard drive
3. Open X1 and click on Tools > Options > Plugin Manager
4. Click on Install New Plugin
5. Navigate to the .X1i file that you saved in step 2 and click Open
6. When asked if you want to replace the existing X1WebServicesPlugin, reply Yes
6. If you already have a source (i.e. RSS feed) configured, you can simply choose No when asked to configure a source

Note: This will cause a reindex of your feed, but should be able to perform updates much better than previous versions.

Please let us know how this new version works for you.

Thanks!

Copernic does not work for me, mainly because I open one folder for each customer in real office work--and put everything into this Folder (Image files, *.XLS files, *.DOC files, *.PDF files, etc.)

Copernic cannot give you a view of everything in a Folder--it forces you to view between Image tab, and you need to switch to another File tab to view the rest of your files.

This is a big no no for me--this will waste me time finding what's in one specific (customer) Folder. Hence X1 is still the best one for me.

Have no idea if Copernic's claim "Lite on computer resources" is marketing fluff, or actual better CPU usage... have not tried CDS for over one year...

I get the impression that plugins were someone's great idea, but then for whatever reason they were abandoned as a feature.

There was also a Skype plugin, but it doesn't work properly and pretty much any postings about the plugins don't get any offical response (as you've noticed)

Which is a shame, but given that you need to purchase X1 now there's really no incentive for anyone to develop for it.

So sorry, the point of my post is that you've probably found a bug and I very much doubt it'll get fixed...

My laptop video flaked out and my tech support moved my Hard drive to a new shell. Now, whenever I try to launch X1, the icon shows in the task bar at the bottom but X1 never appears on the screen.

I'm on vista and if I hold my mouse over the icon, the preview of the app appears above the taskbar, but clicking the icon only results in the X1 icon disappearing.

No errors appear on the screen.

Any ideas of an error log to look at, or how to reset X1?

I thought installing the latest client would reset everything but that didn't appear to do anything.

Do I have to do an uninstall / reinstall?

Thanks.

I'm beginning to feel that anything would be better than X1 and its resource problems. I even built a new go faster machine in the hope that it would help. No chance.

Sitting here with X1 eating ~40 per cent and X1Service anything from 10 to 30 per cent.
Nothing else can get a look in.

I have used other Copernic stuff in the past. Tracker, for example. Good but tends to be abandoned as they move on to something else.

Maybe time to give it another chance.

I have been having problems with X1 randomly locking up. I posted about this, but no responses. So I have done a completly clean install, removed all registry entries, etc and reinstalled X1. The problem persists, but now I have a new more annoying problem:

If I run X1 with Outlook 2007 closed it will not find/index my OST file. If Outlook is closed and I go under tools, Outlook folders, my 2 PST files are there, but not my OST. When X1 re-indexes, it removes all entries found in the OST. If I open Outlook, then X1, everything is fine, and X1 will see the OST file and index as usual.

This can also happen with PST. If I close a PST file in Outlook, then close X1 and Outlook. Reopen X1 only, the closed PST file will not be shown in the folder tree.

Previously, if Outlook was closed and I opened X1, it would prompt me to provide Outlook Creidentials, but not anymore.

Any ideas?

10,000 PDFs? That's puny. According to X1 I have 87,584. I reckon that less than 1 per cent of these is pure image. Most are text.

Did you know that you can use X1 to track down dodgy PDF files?

To do this, get it to show ther search column "Indexing Status". Then tell it to find "-OK".

This will find various flavours of broken PDF files.

At one time, Google Desktop Search offered an OCR tool to handle image only PDFs. I don't know if it still does. If sop, the same tool might work for X1.

You can use Acrobat, or, in my case, PaperPort and OmniPage.

What do you use?

Installed this plugin (on fully licensed X1 client

Set plugin to index RSS feed every 120 minutes.

Plugin indexes for about a day. Then fails to update index automatically, cannot update index manually. Have to "clear index" in options menu and re index.

This failure to automatically index and getting "stuck" repeats over and over again.

Not much good as a plugin if every use requires a re-index and resultant loss of old data.

Weekly, I download dozens of academic journal articles in pdf format as well as old, archival copies of PhD theses so I now have about 10,000 pdfs. *Most* of these are searchable and are indexed. Some are not, and to index them I first re-save them as "searchable" pdfs and X1 then indexes their content.

However, it appears that you are right in that I wasn't really addressing the OP's question - what I was thinking about was the issue above, the abiity of X1 to actually index the content of pdf files. If they are "searchable" then this is possible, otherwise it is not. Those pdfs that are searchable display in X1 but there is no current ability to select and copy text. I suppose I'd like to see this as well, though I hadn't noticed its absence until moments ago

It would be great if it would be possible to install X1 without administrator rights. For that reason I am using YDS on a pc where I donot have such rights and X1 on a pc on which I do.

With YDS it was possible, but why not anymore with X1 ?

It doesn't even help here to reboot.

I can no longer remember a time when X1 did not kick in with X1Service not demanding around 50% of my CPU's resources.

Starting just about anything after a reboot makes it rush into action.

I even see this massive CPU hijack when X1 appears to be doing nothing. No "Files Indexing" in the status bar.

One way to recover your CPU is to stop X1 from indexing via the system tray. Start it and it is better behaved, until it eventually decides that it knows better and wants to put your CPU through its paces.

This is in line with my experience.

I had not thought about it, but now that you mention it, I also see other software kicking in with very high CPU use. I use Windows Task Manager to check this.

In my case, the other software that goes bonkers is the Kontiki software used by BBC's iPlayer, KService.

When both X1Services and KService both kick in, my PC becomes unusable., And it ain't exactly "old technology" (see below).

I will now experiment on my spare PC, one without X1 running, to see if KService is better behaved when X1 is not around.

Thanks for the clue. Maybe it will help X1 to deal with an issue that some of us have been reporting for months.

Not really. The request is for X1 to allow text copying from text PDFs.

I don't know where you get your PDF files from but I have tens of thousands of "true" PDFs.

I also create thousands of scanned PDFs that do have text. (They have been through OCR.)

The original request was for the ability to extract text from these.

The ability to OCR and index image PDFs is a separate issue, and one that some free desktop software has addressed.

Hi,

I'm a home user and have been using X1 for many years. I value this software and prefer working with it rather than the competitors (GDS, Copernic, Windows search) for various reasons.

On the other hand, this the kind of service is one that I'm not willing to pay for, and therefore was very surprised to discover that suddenly the latest copy I've downloaded does not anymore function after the first month (as opposed to the past basic versions).

This means that X1 have decided that they don't want anymore customers like myself. I would have perhaps gone to the lengths of downloading each month the latest version, if it wasn't for the non-friendly evaluation page that has no mechanism for returning users to login (each time one has to fill a dozen fields or so).

This also implies that a customer like myself, who would have happily followed the announcment at http://forums.x1.com/viewtopic.php?t=3773 to vote for X1 as the best free desktop search engine, would no longer do so - sure it's the best, but it's the best non-free desktop search engine out there..

I have been using X1 for quite some time now--the version I am using now is 6.0 build 3565 on a Win2000 computer. Suddenly, I have been getting the following error message:

"The dynamic link library AcroRd32.dll could not be found in the specfied path C:\Program\Files\X1; C:\Winnt\system32 . . . ", etc.

As it turns out, the file is in c:\program files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader directory but this is not on the list given in the textextractor error message. More curious is the fact that the pdf files that are indexed still show up just fine in the view panel.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

My X1 is constantly crashing. It was very stable for a long time, now all of a sudden it has started to lock up and become unresponsive. My only action is to open the task manager and end x1.exe, then begin again. X1 will crash even if it is minimized. I will be using the internet or typing and e-mail, and windows will pop up, and say "X1 has stopped working and must close". If I read the error log, it states: Faulting application X1Service.exe, version 3618.0.0.0, time stamp 0x2a425e19, faulting module kernel32.dll. There is no information listed in the x1 crashlog.txt, in fact it hasn’t been modified for over 2 months, even though the program crashes 4-6 times per day.
I have made the DEP exception fix for all X1 services.
I have run scan PST and Scan OST on all files.
(OST approx .9GB, 2 PST each approx 2 GB)
I dont use RSS feeds, and have disabled indexing.
Webservice plugin disabled
max content indexing file size set to 32 Mb

Since X1 is crashing when it is minimized, I assume it is crashing while indexing. Not sure why there is nothing being written to the crashlogtxt. I assume this is because x1 never fully shuts down. I have to go into the task manager to end the process.
X1 if not minimized stays open on the task bar but cannot be used, closed, etc. The x1 tray icon is unresponsive after the crash.
If x1 is running, it works great. Searches are quick, I can switch between tabs, and use the preview pane. It has locked up while actually using X1, but most of the time, its just sitting in the background.

Do I need to run x1 as an administrator, and use the compatibility assistant to act like XP SP2? I thought this version was Vista compliant.

Windows Vista Ultimate
Intel Centrino Duo 2GHz, with 2GB ram
IE 7, I do have Firefox installed, but hardly use it

X1 6.2.1 on Windows XP, at work.
I've had this problem on the current and last versions of X1. The behaviour is very consistent. This only happens when X1 is open, even with 'work offline', and usually X1 in the background. Some process will suddenly take exactly 50% CPU - one of X1, explorer, outlook, winword, excel, Mindalign. When the offender is killed, CPU returns to normal, but when I click on another program, that takes exactly 50% CPU and so on until I reboot. It ONLY happens when X1 is open, and only these apps go into a spin. I have to reboot at least twice daily because of this . CPU is always exactly 50%, never more. The machine is very sluggish. If I kill and restart explorer it spins up to 50% again. If I leave X1 closed, it never happens. It can start hours after X1 is open; I use it quite heavily in work. It is indexing outlook and a pst file. Has anyone seen this before? Thanks!!!
This will require the addition of OCR to X1... Many pdfs are simply image files (ie jpg) that have been "stitched" together. To search/highlight text, the pdf must be searchable, which would require either that the pdf itself is modified via scanning with OCR software and re-saving or that X1 scan it and save the results.

1. I realize that all the 66 are on my desktop.......either as individual files or inside of folders that themselves reside on my desktop. The mass of my files did not get indexed. I would have expected X1 to find everything on my drive. SO under Tools>Options>Files I clicked on "more indexing options" and enabled (the green buttons) indexing of a major folder, and hit Manual Index. Let's hope this works..... OK good progress, I'll let you know how it turns out. The file count went up to 2,306... which is a couple hundred less than the number shown when I right click on Properties for that folder.... and now email is indexing again. Will let you know tomorrow AM.

X1 will, by default, index files in the expected places. In other words, it will usually pick up on the "My Documents" structure that Microsoft thinks we should all follow. That is why it found your desktop.

X1 will also try to avoid indexing places that contain little useful data, such as the "Programs" and "Windows" folders.

Many people reject Microsoft's strategy and create their own disk structures. For example, I have two disks in my PC, one with data the other mostly for programs. This makes it easier to organise things like backups and indexing. But it does mean that you have to intervene more with other software.

This suggests that X1 might want to think about entering the arcane world of "Regular Expressions".

"Regex" seems to be something that turns on real computer heads who want to find stuff. Then again, it might require a complete rewrite of X1.

You don't give much information to help you!

What sort of documents are you expecting to appear? Word? OpenOffice? The documents tab only shows a limited selection of document types (based on the file's extension)

Where are the files you're expecting to be indexed stored? Have you told X1 to index that location in settings? Have you also told it to index the files fully, instead of just the file names?

I had problems with X1 at first too, until I realised it doesn't index the whole disk by default.

Hope this helps.
Hi wrbach,

While there is no simple way to formulate this type of search, there is a longer, more-complicated method that should allow you to search for this.

Try entering this as your search: "3 4" -"3 0" -"3 4 1" -"3 4 2" -"3 4 3" -"3 4 4" -"3 4 5" -"3 4 6" -"3 4 7" -"3 4 8" -"3 4 9"

The first phrase in the search is the term for which you would actually like to search. The other phrases are prefixed by the [-] minus sign to exclude those results from displaying.

Since you mention that you use this search a lot, you might want to simply save as a favorite search by clicking on File > Save Search As. This will add a search to your "All Searches" pane. Please see this KB article for more information on saving searches, http://tinyurl.com/65wglq

We hope this helps.

If the deal is now off, why does X1 try to install the Yahoo Toolbar (and include a link to Yahoo) in the application?

Seems a bit strange to me.

And as a result is best dealt with by the support that you get when pay for something.

Just go to the support area and file a request.

I don't think anyone has ever mentioned IntelliTrac here before.

That's interesting. Good to have the feedback.

I have always wonderd if some subtle interaction with other software has anything to do with my bouts of massive CPU hogging by X1.

It is now weeks, maybe a month, since it last kicked in and is currently running at up to 50% CPU.

Maybe I should look at some of the various Windows diagnostics to see if I can spot anything.

More useful information: Apparently I had installed a freeware utility that was generating many or all of the DEP errors that I was associating with X1. It is called "Switch Windows" and is disseminated from this website: desktopboosters.com. Once I uninstalled it, my system become stable. It is possible that X1 and Switch Windows have an adverse reaction to each other.

Microsoft's WDS hides the saved search terms by default, and it seems impossible to show them again. Having a toggle option in X1 would improve on their approach in my opinion. Still hoping to see this implemented, AFTER you guys get the Vista x64 version working of course. -pgk

I followed the instructions in the Sticky under FAQs about removing all traces of an earlier X1 installation. Tried then to install. Same problem: can't write textExtractor.exe into X1 subdirectory.

I've done that a couple of times, but it's worth another try. Here goes...

Downloaded a fresh copy (copy 3) and tried it. Get the same message: can't write textExtractor.exe into the X1 subdirectory — although quite a few other files were successfully written into that subdirectory.

And the X1 subdirectory (under "Program Files") is not there before the installation begins: the installation creates it.

I've had X1 installed before. It's frustrating that it can't be installed this time.

I deleted all the 0-length oem*.inf files, as recommended at the link in the post above. Still get an error.

Notice that the error is NOT in writing an *.inf file---it can't write the file textExtractor.exe to the X1 subdirectory (although by that point it had already written quite a few other files into that subdirectory). I did use Windows explorer to look at the subdirectory. Saw a lot of files there, nothing unusual about the directory.

Any other thoughts on why the install won't work?

Hello All,

(Windows Vista Business, X1 Client Version 6.2.1 Build 3618)

I recently had some numerous crashes when clicking on WinWord documents in the preview pane or Outlook messages. Uninstall, Reinstall, Modify, Repair didn't fix it. I then also experienced some errors during Windows Vista Update processes, and found some msi*.log files in hidden system directories with error messages, pointing to a faulty registry permission system.

I don't know what screwed up the registry, and I know that the below code can basically ruin your OS pretty badly if something goes wrong, but it helped for me

I downloaded the Microsoft Windows Resource Kit Tool "subinacl" (google it), copied the below text into a .cmd file, and ran the file as administrator. It ran a long time and fixed my problems.
Everything. No indexing in real time.

But every few weeks, X1 decides that it needs to spend a couple of days, it seems like weeks, hogging nearly half of the CPU (as reported by Windows Task Manager) on my dual-core AMD processor.

While this is going on, I am sorely tempted to dig out my electric typewriter. At least it means I get some reading and filing done.

One day I will find time to log this terrible behaviour, which is a perennial issue in these parts.

About two weeks ago, X1 stopped indexing my results. Instead of having over 5 years of data, it only shows me starting from August 1st.

What happened? Any suggestions?

It is that time of the month again. X1's "take no prisoners" mode has kicked in and it is thrashing my disk and eating processor time.

In the absence of any useful feedback from X1 – I turned off real time index long ago, to no effect – I thought I'd see if anyone else is using the Kontiki file sharing software. I have it because the BBC uses it for TV downloads.

Kontiki also hogs resources. I wondered if the two might be ganging up and making life even more difficult.

Anyone else using Kontiki?

If you are reviewing for corporate use, then it really would be a good idea to contact the sales people. I don't think they bite.

They may have examples of X1 in action in similar environments.

This is a self-support group and most of the people here are lonely end users, few of whom need to get to grips with ADM templates.

If you search the archive, you will find one or two messages.

Hi,

I am reviewing X1 for use as our Corporate search solution but was dismayed to find the evaluation of the Desktop client does not come supplied with the ADM template.

Can anyone link to this or let me know how I can obtain the file without going for the Enterprise version which I believe means I have to contact X1 sales.

Copernic Corporate eval supplies an ADM as does MS and Google.

I have specific requirements around Outlook 2003 (Exchange) mail, offline / online mailboxes, archives and indexing that I need satisfied.
that currently only the MS solution comes near to meeting, but it falls flat with regards to its filtering abilities.

Thanks,

I just had an epiphany. For many weeks I was having freqent DEP crashes and the explorer taskbar disappearing/reappearing. There was no obvious connection to X1. In retrospect, there was a hint: the x1service.exe was hogging my CPU (up to 60% of CPU via task manager). I used msconfig in an attempt to debug the DEP problem. The DEP's kept happening even when x1 was not running (although less often).

Yesterday, X1 totally stopped indexing, so I deleted the old index and had x1 re-index. Since then: No more DEP's and no more CPU hogging.

Eureka !!!!!

Months of frustration are over !!!!

Either way, they are ultimately linked to Outlook. If you add a PST just through X1, it will create a mail profile that is unique for that PST. When you do that, the PST is not loaded in your default Outlook profile, so Outlook may be a little more responsive since it doesn't have to load all 30 PST files when you open your default profile.
<br
