How to get recent versions of X1 to index Eudora

Postby Kenward » Fri Sep 21, 2007 1:48 am

X1 dropped "official" support for Eudora, beginning with X1 v5.6.4, build 3470. (Eudora itself is also changing in ways that are not yet clear.) But Greg Dawes has kindly offered a simple way to get X1 to index Eudora. It appears here for posterity and so that people can find it more easily.

As this relates to Eudora, X1 won't fix bugs, work support tickets or add any new features -- use at your own risk! You can always come back here to see if a fellow user can help.

Here are the steps for exposing the Eudora scanner within X1:

1. Close X1 using File > Exit (and close Eudora if it's open)

2. Locate the file: X1IndexService.ini

This file is found in your X1 index folder, which is located here by default:

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\X1 Desktop Search\

(**If you do not see the Local Settings folder, then from Windows Explorer, click on Tools > Folder Options > View and make sure that Show hidden files and folders" is selected**)

3. Double-click the X1IndexService.ini file to open the file for editing

4. Directly under the [General] section add the following line:
Eudora=1

5. Close and save the X1IndexService.ini file

6. Launch X1

7. Go to Tools > Options > Email > Eudora and verify that the settings are correct. You can also click on "Select Folders To Scan" to verify that the correct folders are selected for indexing.

Again, please note that support for Eudora is no longer provided beginning with v5.6.4 (build 3470).

No, I have nothing to do with X1, just a user since 2004.

You can obtain older versions of Eudora here:

I preferred to go for the older version until we get some good intermediate solution for the Eudora.

Works great thank you.
Now a puzzle, I have 2 Eudora user accounts on my pc. This workaround indexes one of these, but not the other one. How do I get it to do both?

Kenward you are my new hero!

I've been wanting to do this for years!

I've been using X1 for many years (big fan) - and I use both Eudora (Light V3) and Outlook. I have 20+ years of emails in Eudora (250K emails) and just like to keep using it since it works great. I also use Outlook for other reasons (also 200k+ emails). So, I would run 2 copies of X1 - the latest for Outlook + Files and then still the old version of X1 V3.01 Build: 896zzc. Both versions of X1 would live Ok together, as the settings for the old one lived in that old Findwell directory.

But...now with the amazing Mobile X1 app (which is truly life changing - well done X1!), I wanted to get *all* emails back into the one X1 app (latest). And now I can!

Just a tip for anyone else. If you have "spaces" in any folder names in Eudora, you need to remove them otherwise X1 ignores that folder. Quite a job to go through thousands of folders to rename them - but well worth it.

Also, I had a troublesome Eudora folder or two that X1 completely barfed on - and would produce an error - so, just a matter of elimination to work out which folder was corrupt (in X1's eyes).

Once again, Many Thanks! and it works perfectly...

This has moved. But is easily found by putting "Eudora" into the search slot.

If you do that it takes you to Download Eudora.

Just further to this.

I've noticed the latest X1 doesn't catch all emails from Eudora.

Doing a compare with the old X1 V3.01 Build: 896zzc - which I still believe was the best version (quickest to index) shows up many emails that just aren't indexed by the new X1.

Dunno why...
