toolbar / deskbar opens in email by default

Postby stodd » Thu Feb 21, 2008 3:04 pm

Searches on toolbar/deskbar always open in 'Email' by default (eg if you just type the search word(s) and hit enter). I want to open in 'File, and I imagine others might want Documents or All.

I moved 'File' to the top of the favourite searches list: I thought that might help but it didn't.

(oh, and 'see all X1 search rules' opens in IE rather than my default browser Firefox as it should.)

Solved my own problem. Reorder the list (as I had done before). Exit and restart X1, and the default search type becomes the first item in the new Favourite Searches list.

I think my 'solution' was the wrong one. I had made several changes, and assumed just one of them was critical ~ applying on another machine showed me my error.

What seems to work is:

1 - move the order of the Favourite Searches (as in previous post)
2 - stop and restart X1
3 - edit the file C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\X1 Desktop Search\saved searches\Email.X1
4 - change the TabName and DisplayName, eg to zEmail
5 - save
6 - stop and restart X1
7 - change the TabName and DisplayName back again to Email
8 - stop and restart X1

I am sure some subset with fewer 'stop and restart X1' steps should work. At least once it is done it is done and you don't have to repeat it.

Maybe someone in X1 who knows the code and what files are really looked at when can hint a shorter route.

You should not need to mess around with the saved searches themselves. Changes to the interface usually work.

It is a good idea to backup your "Saved Searches" from time to time. You never know when something will happen and wipe them out.

No, I have nothing to do with X1, just a user since 2004.

stodd,

There's a much simpler method to accomplish this:

- Right-click within the X1 Deskbar, excluding the search area
- In the resulting menu, select "Default Search"
- Select your chosen default search tab

That's it!
