How to remove (nearly) all traces of X1 for clean reinstall

Postby Kenward » Wed Feb 27, 2008 3:11 am

This article is the latest version as lifted from the X1 KnowledgeBase. It appears here for convenience and because there is no easy way to provide links from here to KnowledgeBase.

Here are the steps to perform a detailed uninstall/reinstall of X1.

NOTE: The steps differ depending on your operating system (XP vs. Vista/Windows 7).

XP Users:
---------------
1. Close all open programs including Email and X1 using File > Exit (verify that the X1.exe process is stopped via Task Manager)

2. (If possible) Uninstall X1 using Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs - if prompted to save your current settings/preferences, respond "No"

3. Delete these folders from your system (some of these folders may not exist):

  • C:\Program Files\X1
  • C:\Program Files\Stellant
  • C:\x1supportfiles
  • C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Findwell
  • C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\X1 Desktop Search
  • C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temp\X1
  • (**If you do not see the Local Settings folder, then from Windows Explorer, click on Tools > Folder Options > View and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is selected**)
4. Download and run the following ZIP file to remove the X1 registry keys from your system:
http://www.x1.com/cs/x1_killreg.zip

5. Navigate to this folder: C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Microsoft\Common
5a. Within the Common folder, delete any file beginning with the name 'winback' (i.e. winbackD_system.dat)

6. Download X1 by logging into your X1 support portal, http://www.x1.com/support/portal/, account and clicking on the appropriate "Upgrade" link located in the lower, left-hand corner

7. (For paid/registered users) After installing X1, you will want to register the product to turn off the trial mode if you did not already do so using the installation wizard. To enter the registration code, open X1 and go to Help > Register Product. Enter your code and click "Register".

NOTE: You must have admin rights on your computer to register X1.

VISTA/Windows 7 Users:
--------------------
1. Close Email and X1 using File > Exit (verify that the X1.exe process is stopped via Task Manager)

  • C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\X1 Desktop Search
  • C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Temp\X1
  • (**If you do not see the AppData folder, then from Windows Explorer, press and hold the ALT key and click on Tools > Folder Options > View and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is selected**)

Things have moved on a lot since this FAQ first appeared, three years ago. The latest advice on the topic appears in a recent post from Greg Dawes (Thu May 05, 2011).

This is Greg's advice:

  1. Close all open programs including Email and X1 using File > Exit (verify that the X1.exe process is stopped via Task Manager)
  2. (If possible) Uninstall X1 using Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs - if prompted to save your current settings/preferences, respond "No"
  3. Download this file: X1 Installation Cleaner
  4. Double-click the ZIP file to extract the contents
  5. Then double-click (UAC users should right-click and choose to Run As Administrator) the extracted "x1_installation_cleaner.cmd" file
  6. You will be provided with a warning message, respond "Yes"

X1 should now be removed from your system.

X1 Installation Cleaner is one of several new tools that you can use to fix various issues with X1.
