Postby geekmee » Thu Oct 25, 2012 8:04 am

Is there a current or viewer in the works for Microsoft Publisher files?

While the Microsoft Publisher file type is not currently one of our default files for indexing, you could add the file extension to our "white list" to see if this would allow X1 to pick up an IFilter for that file type. Go to Tools > Options > Files. Click Select Files to Scan. Click Specify File Types. Add the file extension to the white box at the bottom of the screen.

And, there may be other option such as the Ifilter Shop: http://www.ifiltershop.com/mindmanager-ifilter.html. (NOTE: The publication of this location does not constitute an endorsement of this organization by X1).

Does an iFilter deal with the issue of viewing indexed files? For me, that is the important bit in geekmee's query.

I have conducted various experiments with non-standard extensions and it always falls over at the viewing stage.

For example, OneNote files. There is a Microsoft iFilter for these, and for Publisher in the Microsoft Office 2010 Filter Packs.

But try to view what you find and it doesn't work.

I'm guessing that this is down to Oracle, the people behind the viewer technology in X1 and much other software.

No, I have nothing to do with X1, just a user since 2004.

Kenward - your guess concerning Oracle is on the money. If they upgrade the OutsideIn Viewer to include Pblisher - then we're good to go on that file type. Beyond that the only option we have are the Ifilters - and yes, sometimes, they don't help. Sorry about any inconvenience to you and our other X1 faithful.
