Some design issues

Postby Kenward » Thu Oct 16, 2008 2:22 am

The new clean look of X1 is an improvement on the slightly dated predecessor. But it does need a few tweaks to tidy things up. At least as shown on my PC.

Image

The bottom of the text is cut off for the bottom line in each block.

This is on a dual-monitor display, 1280 by 1024 on the offending screen.

No, I have nothing to do with X1, just a user since 2004.

Same behaviour with the bottom row of the text in the "Specify File Types" window.

Also in "Searching". "Display".

In "Indexing" the bottom of the buttons is cropped.

Not many windows don't show some sort of evidence of cropped fonts and things.

Cropping, Arrow for more, scrolling, menu dropping?

Postby yeswork » Thu Oct 16, 2008 3:15 pm

In my preferred/default view (which is a non-maximized), I can't see all the tabs (Email, Inbox, Sent Items, Attachments, Files, Documents, Pictures, Music, Calendar, Tasks, Contacts).

This 6.5 beta just crops the right hand tabs that don't fit. And it does not provide an arrow/drop down menu to show/pic those that don't fit. Previous versions of X1 had an arrow to indicate "more" and a way to get to those more items.

Seems like this UI was designed with a fixed view/large size view in mind, and does not shrink/wrap well.

Please think about scaling/resizing/small window views when designing the UI. I'd like X1 to share monitor screen space with other open applications and not be the biggest window too.

Thanks

I agree that this could use fixing. As a temporary measure, did you realise that you can eliminate some of these tabs, and change the order?

I always remove "non work" things like pictures and music files.

You can also shrink the tabs by changing the name of "Sent Items" to "Sent," for example. "Docs" can stand in for "Documents". Just rename them in the "All Searches" pane.

One way to create more room for those tabs would be for X1 to remember an earlier suggestion. Make the tabs run the fill width of the window by putting the "Favorite Searches" heading in line with the "Search:" label. As it is, that particular area looks ugly and a bit amateurish on the design front.

That would create space for several new tabs.

Kenward, thanks for this screenshot. I am running in the same environment as you, dual-monitor with the same resolution, yet I don't see the cut-off dialog box issue.

I also see that down the left-hand side of your screenshot that you have "triangles" as representations of items that can be expanded. On my system, I see + signs.

Have you customized the "Appearance" of your OS?

Does anyone else see this behavior or something similar?

Just to let you know - I have submitted a bug report to our developers and attached your screenshot displaying the truncated option boxes.

yeswork,

Thank you for letting us know about this!

As you can probably tell, we're implementing a new UI completely re-written in C#/.NET. Please continue to let us know of any of these UI bugs that you run across.

Follow up:

It appears that this bug appears for users of Windows Vista as I was able to reproduce on my Vista box (note, I did not see the issue using Windows XP).

Does that mean that you don't need any customisation details?

I don't think I have done anything that might influence this. Other software does not display the same effects.

My major "tweak" has been to adjust the size of the desktop icons from the usual standard sizes.

Correct, we should have everything that we need at this point, thanks.
