6.7.1.4054 Crash on Start (x1Services.exe)

Postby jaybea » Tue Aug 10, 2010 12:34 am

This was offered for download yesterday so I took the offer. Unfortunately, it is now impossible to start X1. If I open it the screen appears for about 10 seconds then disappears. The problem appears to be with x1Service.exe, which is crashing on start. Strangely, if I do not have an internet connection at the start, X1 pops up a connection dialog. I don't recognise the dialog.

I would download and reinstall, but all the download links have been disabled. Is this because of a known problem or in anticipation of the release version (which I guess I must have)?

Found it, thanks Kenward. I was looking at the links to the RC versions on the forum.

Sadly it has made no difference and X1Service.exe crashes on start. Looks like it will have to be a full uninstall and reinstall unless someone has a better idea.

Exception EOleSysError in module X1Service.exe 00072A45

[UPDATE]

Tried a full reinstall, followed by a reboot and it still crashes (the X1 service never starts). Anyone got any ideas?

X1 crashes on me too. I have office 2010 and this started happening after I installed the latest security updates from Microsoft. X1 right now is useless.

Further testing shows that 6.7.1 (Build 4054ar) works fine on my PC with Outlook 2010 and Windows 7 x64 but the release version (Build 4054) crashes on my laptop in the same software environment. I am not going to install the update on my PC!

I can't get any version of X1, this, the latest, or two or three prior iterations, to work on my computer without crashing about ten seconds after loading. It's a new computer with Office 2010 installed. But Office 2010 was on my old computer running Windows 7 as well and I had no problem there. This computer does have 8 gb of RAM, and I'm wondering if that has any relationship to the problem...

I assume you have registered versions of X1 with support?

If so, you should download the http://www.x1.com/cs/x1_diagnostic_tool.exe X1 diag tool. Run that, then log into your support account and submit a bug report: http://www.x1.com/support/customer_care/bug_report.html

Hope this helps!

OK today X1 asked me if it could upload some data that did not include any personal data. Of course being a nice DUFUS I agreed so that they could make the product better right? Well no good deed goes unpunished and now when I load X1 it opens for about 5 seconds then closes. I did a repair install and tried to install it over itself and problem still persists. I am trying to avoid a full uninstall and reinstall as I have nearly 1tb of data to index that takes FOREVER. Has anyone has an luck solving this issue? Thanks

UPDATE, during the process i was able to capture the error that comes up for a split second, it says,
There was an error loading an index. Your system may be low on virtual memory or disk space. Restart X1 to try again

FIXED IT. Instead of reinstalling the program I just Deleted the entire directory where the index files were located. X1 opened fine, I then created a NEW directory with a DIFFERENT name and it appears to be working OK. Hope this helps some of you out there.

In other words, you wiped the index.

If you face this problem again, then it might be better to try one more thing before deleting directories like that, which can be dangerous.

So, instead of doing that try to use the Index deletion.

I faced exactly the same scenario a few weeks ago and climbed up the same escalation ladder. It would be nice to know what causes this behaviour. As you say, error messages disappear in the flick of an eye.

Maybe it is the first Monday of the month when this happens. I have just been hit again.

X1 will not start. An error flashes by in the blink of an eye. It stayed around long enough once for me to grab it:

Image

This has now happened often enough to enough people, and has hit me more than once, to suggest some sort of underlying issue.

I have reported the thing through the usual channels.

Oh well. The usual trick seems to be the only thing that works.

Wipe the index and start again from scratch.

Get it here:

http://www.x1.com/cs/x1_index_deletion_tool.exe

It would be nice if X1 could fix this, though. We now have enough examples to show that it isn't a one off.

I just hope I don't need to find anything important before tomorrow.

I'm glad it's not just me. I'm having the same problem. I have downloaded the index deletion tool. Before I use it, can I confirm what it actually does? Will I have to re-index from scratch? 2TB of data wants to know.

Fortigurn wrote:Will I have to re-index from scratch? 2TB of data wants to know.

'fraid so. It is a start from scratch job.

Since it hit me, I have found that part of the problem may have been a defect with a RAID/SATA card in my PC.

My PC started to freeze completely. X1 was dead on recovery.

After a lot of messing around, I removed the card with the added drives and the issue went away. (The PC was also hanging on boot at the stage where it was detecting the stuff hanging off the card.) So far.

I mention this only because it supports a theory I have, which is that something goes wrong when closing the PC. I wonder if there are difficulties if X1 does not exit gracefully. The index files may not close properly, which then causes it to throw a wobbly when you restart X1.

This is just a theory. It may be rubbish. But I can't think of any other reason why a sudden failure of a disk process might give X1 indigestion.

Thanks Kenward. I haven't had any hardware changes in my computer, though I did have an improper shutdown of Windows which could have been the problem.

Ditto...

Thanks guys for the suggestions; zapping the index worked. This is clearly a problem; It had all the signs of a license validation problem, I'd upgraded to 4054 recently and thought that as my generous (not) 90 day support had run out, maybe I wasn't entitled to it. Can anyone tell me what the upgrade entitlement is? It offered to install 4054, it wasn't as if I'd asked for it :)

In any event, I've now reverted to 4051, with which I've had no problems

BTW does X1 read these forums does anyone know?

Yes, but it is essentially a self-support group.

Requests for support really should go through "official channels".

The change in licensing regime started with version 6.2.4.

If you have managed to install anything after that, you are in the new regime, which uses 16-character registration codes.

The X1 Technologies customer support FAQ should answer your questions.

Sadly, these days support is something that most people charge for. Although 90 days is, as you say, a bit shorter than some software houses offer.

I have the same problem. I confess I crashed my system, so the theory about corrupting the index on crash rings true for me.
I really don't want to rebuild my index.

Ironically the prior build seemed not to do this (I crash my system regularly, so I know). but i cannot reload the old version because I cannot get past the "update now" prompt when the old version launches.

Up front, I have no such problems, but I just wondered.. could it be that it has something to do with the startup and
close down sequence of X1.

In my case X1 only resides in the tastkbar, but is not launched at startup. I launch it separately.
When closing, I close using RMB on the taskbar button, and select Exit (Stop Indexing).

I wait a while, while X1 is saving / updating the indexes.
X1.exe and X1Service.exe are then disappearing from the processes list.

I guess, but am not sure, there will be a minimum of open files-issues this way.

Again, this is just a wild guess.

I too am having/have had this problem several times. The "delete the index" solution is BS! This renders the program useless while it indexes my 3.5TB of data. I've had to do this twice in the last week. Unacceptable. This is a known problem X1 has known about it for some time and not addressed it? More BS.

X1's quality sure has taken a dive in the last couple of years. 5 years ago the program worked fine, back in the 5.x days. 6.x has been a nightmare. I dearly wish either X1 would pull their heads out, or that a good replacement product would come along! I'm sick of this!!

Have you tried the "Index Repair Tool"?

It doesn't always work, but seems to do the trick some times.

I would also investigate external factors that might be causing issues.

For example, if something is messing around with your disks, or Windows is not closing gracefully, you may have disk corruption. (It always helps to run a check from time to time.)

I say this partly because one day last week, my PC completely lost one of its drives. X1 naturally detected this and decided that there was nothing there to index, and so cleaned out the index. It had to start afresh after I had "reconnected" the drive.

Thanx for the hint about the index repair tool. I'll look into that. As far as drive issues, nothing else access that drive is having problems and there isn't any evidence of problems or unusual errors reported by SMART. Soooooo. Don't know. I just want it to work. Make it go! ;-)

I just stayed up to 6am trying to sort out VMware lock up issues, so I finally come to after that and first thing in the new day I am immediately presented with X1 starting, but vanishing a few seconds later. Not a great start to the day; everything I seem to touch turns to the brown stuff at the moment. So I googled, found this thread pretty quickly, and am consequently re-building my index. Thanks for the link to the index deletion tool (else I too would have just deleted the index manually). On that does this tool do something special versus just deleting the files?

As far as how my index got corrupt; well as I said I have been dealing with VMware lock up issues so hard to hard reset this virtual machine last night, so I guess that may have done it, although in the past (and I have been using X1 for many years - the free version - until I recently purchased the latest 6.7.2) I can't recall this happening ever before. Maybe once, if ever. I've only had this new version about two weeks (my trial would have ended in a couple of days) so I hope this is not indicative of the future.

I don't know that it needs to do anything else. The problem is that the index is a complicated bunch of files. Hard to handle manually without also killing customisation stuff that you want to keep.

But did you also try the index repair tool? It works some of the time and is less traumatic than having to do a complete rebuild.

Might be worth getting a copy for future reference.

Gotcha.

Didn't try it; I'm only using X1 for e-mail (all I ever have used it for) so my index didn't take too long to rebuild anyway.

Might be worth getting a copy for future reference.

I did do that; will give it a shot next time if there is a next time. Thanks.

OK. Your lucky if all you need to index is email.

I have more than 100,000 PDF files that I use in research for the articles I write. Hell's own problems when the index blows up.

I LOVE X1...BUT...I have experiences this "crash on startup" twice now in the past 5 days! Both times I have had to use the index deletion tool, a great solution, BUT my email files are so large, it literally takes two days to reindex. I suspect the problem is originating from a Windows crash of some sort (I do run Windows 7 Ultimate, which is, IMHO, the best O/S Microsoft has ever made, but...

If there is anything X1 can do to fix this HUGE problem, I can't wait for their solution...

Do you have any automatic jobs running that might lock the index files? Things like a defrag running automatically? What antivirus do you use? If possible in your antivirus, have you set it so that it bypasses the X1 Application Data folder?

Just a few things to try. I use X1 everyday and I've only hit this problem once, which seemed to be caused by my use of the Defraggler software.

For a start, use the new index repair tool rather than the one that zaps the whole thing.

That is less drastic.

Also ensure that your PST files are error free. Find and run scanpst.exe.

I found that a quicker method of dealing with a corrupt index was simply to delete the entire folder and restore it from a backup. Much faster than spending time rebuilding. Unfortunately I'm now at the 'X1 crashes on startup' stage. I've uninstalled and re-installed 4054ar, 4054by, and 4054cx, and they all do the same. I've just run the diagnostic tool.

FWIW, I discovered that I could delete just the *.dat files from the index directory. This cleared the index while preserving all my settings. This would allow me to launch X1 and restart indexing from scratch.

Probably depends on your version of Windows.

To find where it is for you, open X1:

>>Tools
>>Options
>>Indexing

Look at "Current Location".

By the way, if you change that location, X1 does not start to index from scratch. It moves your index to the new location and picks up where it left off.

No, I have nothing to do with X1, just a user since 2004.

That's the problem I'm having right now; X1 won't open. I have just reinstalled X1 (for the fifth or sixth time), and it won't open. I tried the index repair tool; X1 still won't open. I tried the X1 index deletion tool; X1 still won't open. Both the X1.exe and X1Systra.exe are running, but nothing is happening.

It's ok, I always move the location and then restore the index from a backup.

Well after a week of this, I'm out of ideas. The program is installed, X1.exe and X1Systray.exe both run, but X1 does not display. A little later I receive a Windows message informing me that X1 has stopped working, and X1.exe closes.

Have you tried totally removing all traces of X1 after uninstall, then reinstalling?

I know it shouldn't come to this, but it might help?

I've removed as many as I can find; standard uninstall through the Control Panel, then a registry clean, then a search for files with 'X1 in them. I'm open to any other suggestions.

Here is the "official" line:

X1 Discussion • View topic - How to remove (nearly) all traces of X1 for clean reinstall
http://forums.x1.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3613&p=11286#p11286

It may be a bit old, but I don't think a lot has changed on that front.

Maybe someone can point out any changes that we should take on board.

The manual steps listed should still be current.

As an alternative to the manual uninstall steps, we've also recently introduced a tool that automates this process:

  1. Close all open programs including Email and X1 using File > Exit (verify that the X1.exe process is stopped via Task Manager)
  2. (If possible) Uninstall X1 using Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs - if prompted to save your current settings/preferences, respond "No"
  3. Download this file: X1 Installation Cleaner
  4. Double-click the ZIP file to extract the contents
  5. Then double-click (UAC users should right-click and choose to Run As Administrator) the extracted "x1_installation_cleaner.cmd" file
  6. You will be provided with a warning message, respond "Yes"

X1 should now be removed from your system.

I went through the entire cycle of removing X1 and re-installing, without any luck. Finally I just left it and used another (far inferior), search tool. Every now and then I would check to see if X1 was behaving itself, and it wasn't. I let it send occasional reports. Then today, lo and behold, right out of the blue it opened when I rebooted my computer (which I've done many times between now and the first time that this problem emerged). It also downloaded a couple of updates (Build 4054dh). I cleared the index and rebuilt.

Incredibly the index folder is smaller than it used to be, by a magnitude of about 30 (317MB compared to 10GB), despite the fact that everything seems to be indexed. Not only that, but the entire program is running far more smoothly and amazingly quickly, the best I've ever seen. I don't know what happened, but I'd really like to thank whoever was responsible.

I suspect the hand of Harold Camping. Did it come back to life on May 21?

No, just this morning. It's very odd. I'm particularly amazed at how much smaller the index is.
