Partial match

Postby ppx1 » Thu Aug 26, 2010 11:40 pm

I search with X1 ® Professional Client Version 6.7.1 (Build 4054ar) on Windows 7 on "All" on search term "INC000013127123". This finds one email match. However, if I search on "13127123", X1 finds no match. Why is that? Does X1 not support partial matches?

In the same vein, searching on "case/INC" finds an email with text http://case/INC000013127123, but searching on "se/INC" finds nothing. I expect "se/INC" to match http://case/INC000013127123 with default settings, without having to turn any X1 option on. Is this a bug / what is the logic?

This is how X1 works. If you read: http://www.x1.com/download/quickstart.pdf you'll find the following: "Prefix Searches: Each string of characters you type is treated as the beginning of a word. That is, you can find an email message from Fred by typing Fre, but not by typing red."

You will find other people have requested the same thing if you search the forums a little.

The reason for it I'm not sure, but no doubt it's to do with the Index size and the ability to search it so quickly, some things must be unsupported.

Is there a way around this like a plug-in to search on any part of a word?

ppx1,

No, there is no plugin or work-around for this behavior....this is how X1 was designed.

This design will miss some important hits, like searching on a part of a reference number: omitting the leading zeros will not find the proper match. cry, cry, cry...

You seem to be searching on filenames.

Until X1 fixes this "defect", you might like to consider adding another tool to your armoury. One that can search "on the fly".

It may not be as quick as X1, but something like FindOnClick from "2brightsparks" is pretty efficient.

Even if it isn't a filename you search on, this works, albeit slowly.

No, I have nothing to do with X1, just a user since 2004.

Another 3rd party alternative for files is Mythisoft FileLocator Lite - Free File Searching Utility. There is a professional (pay for) version that will search emails from MS-Outlook PST files.

And just for emails Xobni - MS-Outlook search plugin

I have licensed these tools to use/evaluate, but I still prefer X1.

Apologies for reviving a dead thread here, but this is a huge deficiency in X1. We use Remedy in our company and my team is constantly searching through thousands of tickets when end users chase them down. A search for 659201 must be able to find HPD000000659201; a search for 55516 must be able to find CRQ000000055516. A search for exchsvr083 must be able to find lonexchsvr083 and tokexchsvr083. Google Desktop has this functionality, as does Outlook's built-in search function. Any enterprise-class search tool must be able to do this; I've seen the reasons listed as to why it's not in the design and they aren't satisfactory. It is a glaring omission in an otherwise excellent product. I see that this has been requested of X1 for quite some time and hope it's implemented before Microsoft reengineers its internal, free seach feature in Exchange and Outlook.
