Blog Updates?

Postby tjh » Thu May 01, 2008 7:35 am

I just found the official X1 blog. It hasn't been updated since September and in fact only has two posts.

Does X1 have any way of interacting with their users?

What do you mean "interacting"?

They appear here. Paying customers can use support.

No, I have nothing to do with X1, just a user since 2004.

I meant like discussions of new features, dates that new versions might be released etc.

Having read your post here I think it's probably a dumb query. They're focused on the corporate user, so there's no reason for blogs etc.

X1 sometimes let users try out a public Beta version before release, so you would know of an upcoming version and its new features when you come across a new Beta...

That said, the public feedback for the privilege of trying out X1's Beta versions can be improved (to put it mildly)...

Remember, it's a two-way-street...
With GREAT Beta feedback, X1 will be motivated to put even more Beta's out for users' feedback...

Personally I find that the information about the beta is very little and confusing. I don't understand the benefits of the new features and there are no screen shots to, at least, give me a sense of what I can expect.

Sure, you can say just download the beta and try it out. But X1 is something that I use very often in my daily activities and it is very crucial for my productivity. To install a less stable version for benefits that I don't understand just does not make sense to me. Perhaps if X1 gives more thoughts on communicating and informing the public, people will be more motivated to try out the betas.

Yea

My point was that it seems there is a small but technically minded and willing to help community here. It seems a little odd to me that X1 doesn't take advantage of those willing to help make the product better.

I know I'm certainly interested in doing what I can to make X1 better, I've already submitted about 6 feature requests (mostly small)

I guess they are too busy writing neat bits of software.

It really just needs a bit more thought and someone in the company to have the responsibility. They could even contract it out to a freelance writer!

One thing you do not want is the software blog that comes along every day telling you how wonderful the product is. For an example of how not to do it, try Perfectdisk.

Sorry, pgk, but I have to take offense with your "5-minute per day" statement. Rest assured, that X1 takes much more than 5 minutes per day on average monitoring the forums.

The forums, primarily, are intended as a user forum. We step in and add content when and where appropriate.

I understand it must be frustrating for users to write up a long and detailed feature request that seems technologically feasible in the hopes that the feature will be forthcoming in the next release. Please understand that we need to weigh feature requests against other feature requests and against user experience.

To discuss your specific example, you might recall that X1 introduced drag-and-drop in a Beta program a long time ago, only to pull it before release because it introduced too many bugs. It was over a year before it was reintroduced into the product. This speaks to both the benefit of the Beta program (to X1 and to users) and to how what appear to be simple changes can end up not being so simple in the end.

OK, fair enough. We will try to do this with feature requests going forward. If there are threads that you are waiting for this kind of response on, please add a post to it so we can provide give a little feedback.

Well, I didn't quite expect this level of reaction, but it's exactly what I was hoping for. Just the odd word/comment from X1 now and then so we know our posts here aren't totally in vain.

I understand that the forums are mostly for user interaction and Q&A, but it's nice to have a little interaction from the devs as well.

@pgk: That's a great list!

I'm really glad to see that X1 is paying attention to users. now if there were some way we could get the blog to work and get X1 staff on twitter that would complete the scene and make them officially user-oriented.

This is really good news Tod! Thanks very much. It's nice just to know that we have some voice, even if it's a small one.

Kind Regards,

Forum Moderators cannot "Unlock" these locked discussions threads!

I've tried for you folks, but simply cannot unlock them :(

OK, only 1 of the Discussion Thread was [Locked], and that's because the entire Beta Forum had been [Locked] by X1 Admin!

Well, that is an interesting historical record!

I guess this is a sign that blogging has never really caught on in the corporate world.

Maybe they all hang out on one of those social networks that I won't join.
