X1 quit working -- opens to Gibberish

Postby dinkalley » Mon Aug 01, 2011 4:11 pm

I occasionally use X1, and had not opened it for a while. When I open the program today, it was unreadable -- the menus, the columns -- everything turns into little square boxes. The only things that look normal are the icons in the menus, and the screen in the right side box ("Fast as you type" )
I don't know how to do a repair because I can't read the menus. I don't know how to re-install this if it is corrupted, and there is no support since I renewed in March. Any advice?

Hi dinkalley,

Since X1 uses .NET (and WPF), the behavior that you describe (i.e. the UI is full of boxes/squares or is missing text in menu items, search tabs and icons) is an indication that the .NET 3.5 Framework is in need of repair.

Windows XP:
    1. Please open Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs
    2. From the list, select: Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1
*Note: Since X1 uses the latest version of the 3.x framework, run the repair on 3.5 SP1 and not on v4.x if installed
    3. Choose Change/Repair
    4. Choose Repair - run through the repair wizard
    5. When complete, restart your computer and see if there is any change

Windows 7/Vista:
There's a Microsoft blog, by Aaron Stebner, that shows how to repair the .NET 3.5 framework on Win 7/Vista computers:
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archiv ... vista.aspx
    The basic steps are to:
    1. Click the Windows/Start button
    2. Type CMD, and then right-click on the Command Prompt that shows up, and select 'Run as Administrator'
    3. At the DOS Prompt, type: sfc /scannow
    4. Press Enter
