Google desktop is lost in the cloud

Postby Kenward » Sun Sep 04, 2011 6:57 am

Google is pulling the plug on its desktop search software.

Since there has been a shift from local to cloud-based storage and computing, as well as the integration of search and gadget functionality into most modern operating systems Google Desktop, the product will be discontinued on September 14.

Google to discontinue 10 products including Google Desktop, Google Pack | The Windows Club

I don't know about everyone else, but the thought of putting everything into the clouds fills me with trepidation. So, I will still need a desktop tool with a bit more power than Microsoft offers.

No, I have nothing to do with X1, just a user since 2004.

Google Desktop was what I started using before I found X1. It was frustrations with Google Desktop actually that led me to X1, so I'm a little sad to see it go really. Though I haven't used it in years. Looking at its Changelog, it wasn't updated in a long time so it's no surprise really that it's snuffed it.

Have to agree with you on storing everything online. It's handy, but not the perfect solution either!

Interesting piece on Google. But what do we make of this:
This is a positive development for users and we’re excited that most people now have instant access to their personal information.

Reads like rubbish to me. Positive development?

Had they any sense, they would not switch solely to cloud, but would tweak their software to do both.

X1 should do likewise and think about better cloud search.

As social networks are essentially cloud thingies, X1 Social already takes the business in the direction.

And if Greg's throwaway comment about the "next version" is anything to go by we could be in for some interesting changes.
