Hello all,

We're extremely proud to announce that we have finally released Search 8.6.

This release represents a substantial update to X1 Search's capabilities, leveraging all the development of the past months as well as pushing the Search product forward with improvements and new features gathered along the way.

We appreciate your patience during the long wait for the new version of Search 8, and all of us at X1 are excited for what is coming in the future.

Search 8.5 Release Notes

New Features:
- Vastly improved X1 index stability
- Files scanner now indexes the content of files without names or extensions
- Added the ability to search and refine by select Microsoft Office and selected EXIF metadata fields
- Re-worked the "Search In Attachments" function to be more visible and user-friendly
- Added a new Archive Items saved search in the Files data source with similar functionality to the "Search In Attachments" function in the Outlook data source
- Changed the text extraction process of IMAP emails containing HTML markup for better parity in search results between data sources (requires re-index of IMAP index)
- User configured Saved Searches can be re-ordered via dragging and dropping within their respective Data Source
- User created Saved Searches are now preserved upon version upgrade
- Updated compatibility plugins to better preview supported file types
- Added the ability to more precisely search and refine by file extension via the new Extension field (requires re-index of Files index)
- Added support for .ZIPX and various other types of container files
- Added the ability to completely disable automatic update checks

Bug fixes:
- System time changing due to travel no longer necessitates a rescan of indexes
- Resolved several issues that lead to longer delta and initial scan times for the Files data source
- Fixed a bug that caused Outlook PSA buttons to be inoperable on un-cached Exchange mail items on some machines
- Email items opened via the "Open" PSA now always correctly transition to a "Read" state
- Fixed an issue that would cause custom hotkey bindings to be restored after launch of the client
- Addressed a bug that resulted in a X1 Search 8 displaying an incorrect error dialogue regarding missing .PST files
- Fixed a bug that resulted in Real Time Indexing being improperly applied to Network Shares
- CTRL + CTRL hotkey now properly respected
- Reworked the Outlook Contact previews to be more user-friendly
- Network path directories and subdirectories now display in alphabetical order
- Improved display on 4k resolution monitors
- Many other key bug fixes and improvements

Yea. Nice to see a new release. Eager to check it out. With the volume of emails I receive I cannot function without X1!

Sadly, the viewer in the new version still does strange things with some files.

It is an Inso/Oracle problem. QuickView plus creates an even worse mess.

Not much that you can do about it beyond scream at Oracle.

Hello,

Upon installing the new version I have lost all of my results.

There are 628,000 items indexed in my X1, but the morning after installing the latest 8.6 update I can no longer view any results.

The left hand navigation tree is visible, but when you click on it nothing becomes highlighted. The software is not frozen. I can click across the top navigation menu (All, email, email and attachments, etc). However, no matter what I click on, it states "no results" even though on the bottom left hand corner it says 628,872 items indexed.

I'm running windows 10 with latest updates. I have tried uninstalling and re-installing and it makes no difference. Do you have any suggestions as to what the issue could be?

My installation attempt also failed twice - one after a complete reboot. Same problem as Cgi-joe above.

Many users who have issues installing via the bootstrapper often have success when using the direct .MSI installers which are linked above.

That being said, if you'd like to help us troubleshoot this issue here's what the error message refers to:

SETUP/INSTALL LOGS:
X1SearchSetup.log
X1Setup.log
x1search_install##########.log (looks like x1search_install635833909506379069.log)
MSI@@@@@.LOG (where @= a string of numbers and letters)

Here is how to locate those:
1. Click the "Start" button
2. In the Run box, enter the following: %TEMP%
3. Press Enter
4. In the resulting directory, sort by the 'Name" column and view the most current 'x1setup.log', 'x1search_install##########.log' and 'MSI@@@@@.LOG' files

I'm happy to pass along feedback and logs to the development team, but for best results I'd try the going through the X1 Support system.

It makes it easier for us to track trending issues and resolve them if possible.

Add me to the list of those who did the update and now have a non-functioning X1.

This seems to happen every time there is an update to X1. Maybe I should just ignore future updates.

I had a big problem with a Udate in version 6. Since then I'm always waiting.

Are there success messages for 8.6?

Please let me know here, if the bugs are fixed, then I will also update.

I had the same problem 'error installing check logs'
The logs stated less than 10% disk space was the (10% = 50gb!)
Deleted file 111 to get above 50gb and it installed

Maybe it needs to check for the minimum available space, not 10% of free space

Was able to get this version installed, but I want to go back in time an beat my two day previous self for even considering the upgrade. Stupid... stupid... stupid.

I don't get it. Why do search results now take 15-20 seconds to show up? Why, once they show up, do preview windows take 10-20 seconds to show up? I moved from a perfectly functioning installation to one that, if I use it, will actually slow down my work-flow by a considerable amount.

If I uninstall and move back to the previous version (how do I even do that?), what are the odds that this installation has corrupted the previous? You should include an option on the upgrade message: "Never show this again" for those of us too stupid to leave well enough alone.

edit: Why is the "open" option in email greyed out? Why can I only open email using ctrl-o? Also, why, after waiting 10-20 seconds for the preview to show up, does the preview many times not actually show up?

I find it interesting that many people are reporting similar problems. And what do we hear from X1...crickets. Nothing. Nada. Zip.

I've already started exploring other options, and if this situation doesn't get fixed quickly, I will probably go to another program.

X1 now appears to be indexing a lot slower than normal, causing excessive CPU usage for me. During those times X1 is very slow to respond. Is another release coming out soon.....?

I believe this is my problem. When it is indexing, it slows the use of X1 down dramatically, and it apparently is reindexing my entire system after upgrading. This was confusing to me since it was still showing my results, albeit slowly.

X1 Search is now able to index a whole lot more files on the drive than in previous versions (including many items that we previously didn't have visibility into), and I suspect that's part and parcel of some of the behavior that you're seeing.

The PSA buttons being greyed out are generally related to two things:
1. Stale Outlook registry keys causing issues (a la https://help.x1.com/hc/en-us/articles/115001757351-X1-Search-Outlook-PSA-Buttons-Nonfunctional)
2. A known bug in MAPI (the communications layer between Outlook and X1 Search) that causes emails that are un-cached on the file system (meaning stored on the Exchange Server and not physically present in the PST/OST on the machine). We've improved on that behavior, but we're working around a Microsoft bug, so it's by no means completely fixed.

I can't tell what the particular issue is without reviewing logs, so please submit a ticket here: https://www.x1.com/support/x1_search_submit_case.html

If we can't get you up and running on 8.6, we'll roll you back to the previous version, however the checkbox in the "Options" window to disable all future automatic update checks is specific to 8.6, so you'll be prompted to upgrade from time to time.

Already done...and have submitted diagnostics zip file as well. I'm now on Day 2 without my desktop search. I rely on X1 heavily, and almost missed a deadline because I had to manually open dozens of documents and do individual searches in each document.

I appreciate that you're listening, but based on what I'm reading in the forums, lots of people are having problems with the latest release, and the complaints sound very similar. It sure seems like X1 pushed out a bad update, and the best things you can do at this point are (a) fix it, and (b) keep your customers informed on what you're doing to fix it, and give us a timeline.

At the suggestion of X1 tech support, I did a clean uninstall of X1 and reinstalled it. That solved the problem for me. Here are the instructions I was given, but you should confirm that this will work for you by contacting tech support. You will need your license ID and password to do the new installation. As always, be sure to set a restore point before doing anything that involves your computer's registry.

PREREQUISITE:

If you can launch the X1 interface go to Menu > License and Deactivate your current license activation.

- UNINSTALL

1. Access Control Panel > Programs & Features.

2. Uninstall X1 Search. When prompted, opt NOT to save your X1 settings.

3. Check the following locations for remaining X1 Search files, and delete them:

- C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\X1 Search - this is the default location of the X1 Search data directory.
- C:\Program Files\X1 Search - this is the install location of the X1 program files.
- C:\Program Files (x86)\X1 Search - this is the install location of the X1 program files on a 64-bit operating system, running a 32-bit version of Outlook.

NOTE: You may find an X1 Search directory under C:\ProgramData\. You do NOT need to delete this directory.

4. Click Start > Run > Regedit or click your Windows Logo Key + R to launch regedit.exe and delete the X1 Search registry keys found in any of the following locations:

- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\X1 Search
- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wow6432Node\X1 Search
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\X1 Search
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Wow6432Node\X1 Search

- FRESH INSTALL

1. Perform a fresh install of X1 Search 8 by launching the X1Searchsetup.exe found here: http://download.x1.com/downloads/pro/X1SearchSetup.exe

Backing up C:\Users\poy\AppData\Local\X1 Search\ folder regularly saved me lots of trouble in the last couple of months.

I shutdown X1 (settings to close its indexer on exit) and then manually use Acronis to backup the folder incrementally.
Works like a charm and gives me peace of mind as X1 index corruption occurs from time to time.

Just make sure that those indexes aren't locked by Acronis when you're attempting to index data!

You should see a marked decrease in the incidence of index corruption after this version, Poy. We've made what we think are substantial improvements in that area.

I know you're quite the power-user, so I'm interested to see your results.

I have upgraded via the MSI download, as I was having the same problem as others have mentioned of the "error installing check logs" message when trying to install from the new version message.

I tested the install on my laptop first, to see what happened. The install went painlessly. I was expecting the index to be wiped, but it survived the upgrade and everything seems to be running as it should. I have upgraded on my PC as well (from the MSI) and have no problems with it.

The first couple of previews took a while to appear, but they are appearing quickly now. I have 320k items indexed.

trying to upgrade from X1 Search 8.5.2 6001si (64-bit) to 8.6 using the upgrade prompt. After I accept the License Agreement and click Next, I get an error. "Unable to complete setup due to an unexpected error. Please see logs for details". Here is the log from C:\Users\...\AppData\Local\X1 Search\logs

well the index corruption issue is still alive and well in my case, total number of items in index drops to around 64,000 items from around 550,000 items. this is unfortunate since that first line in the 8.6 release notes had me excited that the issue was finally fixed.

Masta Blasta,

I'm willing to bet what you're seeing isn't index corruption, but a byproduct of our fix for one of the other annoying bugs:
8.6 Release Notes wrote:- System time changing due to travel no longer necessitates a rescan of indexes

The delta scans on files are triggered based on a check of the "Modified Time" metadata value which was - previous to 8.6 - calculated in the machine's local time.

If that time zone was to change (for example: if you happened to travel between time zones), the modified time value would be inaccurate and X1 Search would re-index those items.

The solution for that bug was to change the calculation of the Modified Time to be in the UTC time format, which never changes.

The downside of that fix is that every item in your index must have that calculation performed on it. This requires removal and re-indexing into the index, as most metadata values are calculated upon ingestion into the index.

In order to avoid the issue of everyone who updated to 8.6 having their index be automatically deleted and rebuilt from the ground up, we elected to allow everyone to preserve their existing indexes - however, if you elected to keep those existing indexes the modified time re-indexing issue is still present.

Delete and rebuild your indexes, and I'll bet this problem is solved for you.

I've been out of the office for a couple of weeks, and have not had a chance to follow-up with this. What I am finding is that every day X1 does a delta scan of my email, and this takes 5-6 hours. While the delta scan is occurring, X1 is essentially unusable. Is there something I am doing wrong that is causing X1 to do the Delta scan each day after logging in, or is there something I can do to prevent this from happening?

After it finishes, things seem to work as they should, but I've only had 3-4 days with this version so far. I cannot say for certain that this always hold true.

I have a similar issue. X1 does a full scan of EVERYTHING every time I either (a) reboot my computer, or (b) exit X1 and restart. Very annoying.

thank you cscott for the detailed explanation. unfortunately this is occurring on a new installation of X1 and on machines that do not change time zones.like other versions before, it is always the items from drive c: that get lost, the index retains items from other drives.

also seeing the same issue as SoCalScott, X1 is running a full reindex of the computer after every boot.

Literally just happened again, less than an hour ago, when I had to exit X1 to do a Microsoft Office 365 update. Restarted X1, and it is now in the midst of a full re-index process.

I am getting a very odd behavior now from X1. My results are all blank with a "Loading data" message (attachment). It is not as if the index is lost, because the email index clearly has 338,177 items (attachment). I also get an intermittent "connecting to search service" message. A restart of X1 did not help.

What should I do?

EDIT: I can't get the images to show, and there is no way to simply upload them. Not going to spend 20 minutes figuring that out.

X1 won't connect to the search service. And even though it is a desktop program with no need for the internet, because X1 has decided to police its program in that way, I now have a useless program. I really don't want to uninstall and spend 10 hours indexing if this is a problem with X1's servers. Anyone else experiencing this?

Hi,

this "search service" is a X1 service running on your local computer, not on internet. The error you are receiving means that the search service is crashing for some reason.
Can you check the X1 logs folder (by default located at C:\Users\{USERNAME}\AppData\Local\X1 Search\logs for any xml files whose names contain "crash"? Examining one of those files may hint at what is the problem with the search service.

I do have such xml files. I opened up a support case and sent them. I can't see anything of note or real value in them (they are very short), but perhaps they will. I'd upload them here for you to look at, but there is no attachment feature.
