Was invited to the 8.3 Beta

Hi. I'm a big fan X1. I just got an email inviting me to the 8.3 beta, and I thought I'd take a look. I would give it a try, but the recommendation is that I uninstall the version I am currently running. While I understand why that might be preferable, it's also quite inconvenient, especially for a beta that will expire in 6 weeks or so.

It might also be worth noting that I am currently still using my registered version of X1 6.2.4, since I didn't care for the UI changes in version 7 (which IIRC was abandoned at some point) and that seem to have for the most part been carried forward into version 8. Truth is, I regularly think about updating X1, as I use it many times a day. But since I use it almost exclusively for Word docs, Excel sheets, PDFs, my Outlook containers (which have POP and/or IMAP access to all my online mail accounts), and do not use SharePoint, I've yet to actually find the incentive to do so. Version 6.2.4, from March 2009, is still working beautifully on my Windows 7 devices.

I'm probably not your typical user. But then in my experience X1 isn't a typical application in that I use it all the time, rely on, yet am unable to find a reason to upgrade it even though the enthusiasm and affection I feel for it would under other circumstances make me look forward to upgrading to the latest and, presumably, greatest. But version 6 hit a sweet spot where features, stability, and (or critical importance) UI are as good today as they were 6 years ago.

I have, however, recommend X1 to others and I know at least a couple of sales have resulted from that over the last year or so.

Is it possible to get an X1 tee shirt, like your team is wearing on the About page?

Best to you. And happy searching.

Hi Maya,

Thanks for taking the time to post here on the forums.

We can understand your hesitance to move from a version of X1 that is working perfectly for you. The release of X1 Search 8 was a significant shift in the core framework and features of X1. As such, we simply can't support upgrades from the 6.x.x line to 8.x.

If you change your mind and wish to give version 8 a try, we'd love to get your feedback.

If you have any additional comments, please don't hesitate to share them here on the forums or to me directly at the email noted below.

Thanks again!

Hi Jerald.

Thanks for the reply. I'm thinking I probably will check out the next version once it is available. X1 really is a super product.

The version that is now in beta is really just another iteration of X1 8.X, mostly with additions that won't do much to many users.

I have no idea when 8.3 will land – probably in a month or so from past experience at "tweaks" like this – but I'd guess that it will be quite some time before we see X1 9.X. So is that is your idea of a "next version" it may be some time.

By the way, X1 recommends uninstalling X1 6.X before installing new versions, but some of us ignore them and run the two side by side. (I would not be at all surprised if some of the X1 folks also break the rules on this front.) I do it because they removed some useful stuff. I confess that I don't go into 6.X much these days, but it does not seem to clash with 8.3.
