"Connection with the X1 Service has been lost" error

After updating from 8.6.1 to 8.6.2 today, I was repeatedly prevented from successfully launching and using X1 due to the subject error. I ended up having to uninstall X1 and install it again via a new download. I actually purchased the new version today, because I was tired of wasting my time with this problem and wanted to maximize the odds of success.

In my 10+ years of using and installing X1, I've found that updating from the existing installation virtually never works. There's almost invariably an error of one kind or another that requires the uninstall and reinstall of the software. After all these years, why can't the developers get this right?
