Search terms found, but not exclusively

Postby kblount » Thu Jun 30, 2016 8:32 am

I'm not sure if this is a bug, or if I'm doing something wrong. I've dealt with it ever since installing V8 on my laptop, and now I'm hoping someone can tell me what I'm doing wrong. As I mentioned, I have V8 on my travel laptop, but I still have 6.7 (or whatever the latest last version was) on my desktop -- primarily because of this issue.

If I search my email for "3590-05" (with quotes included) on 6.7, and then put my name in the From field, then it shows (with highlights) all the emails that I've sent with 3590-05 included, and nothing else.

If I do the same search in V8, it shows a couple of emails that have 3590-05 (and it highlights them), but it also shows thousands of emails that do not have this term, but does have 3590 listed. I have to search through and try to find the needle in the haystack to find the ones that only have the search term I'm looking for.

Is this a bug, or did the syntax for performing this search change between 6.7 and V8?

How about "3590-05"?

No, I have nothing to do with X1, just a user since 2004.

If you mean "3590-05" with the quotes included in the search term, that's what I am using. This works wonderfully in V6.7.*, and doesn't work well at all in V8.

Indeed, that is what I meant. Just wanted to confirm that you had tried the different flavours. What happens without the quotes? Or even "3590-05"=

The problem could be the "-" in the middle. X1 doesn't play nice with "punctuation". But I don't think there have been any changes on that front in recent incarnations.

Are you sure that it did what you want in 6.7? Or is your memory playing tricks?

X1 could do with some "grammar" tweaks for that sort of search. Something along the lines of simplified regex would be nice. It could use "3590 05" to catch things like "3590-05" or ""3590.05".

Maybe it does. I don't use that sort of search myself.
