YDS File Viewer Pack?

Postby frankd14612 » Fri Jun 13, 2008 1:07 pm

I was a YDS user when it first came out, then for some reason just stopped using it. I have an old (2000) standalone PC, no network, and just home-grown files, but a lot of them.

Just recently I had the need to start using it again but now I find it's been discontinued in favor of the for-pay product XI. No problem there, but I just can't afford to buy software at this time.

In firing up my YDS (version 1.2 Build 1852jc) I find that it works, but I can't view the contents of pdf, text or doc files anymore. Instead, the preview panel shows the message: "Sorry, a preview is not available for this file. To preview this file type, please visit the Yahoo! Desktop Search website to download the free file viewer pack."

As you might expect, when I go to the linked site, all I see is information about X1.

Question: Is there any way I can get or download the "free file viewer pack" for my copy of YDS? I really can't afford to buy the XI product, nor do I really need its improved capabilities for my standalone PC. Any help in this direction would be appreciated.

Thank you!

If you search Googleland you may find an earlier version of X1 that does not need money.

Try the usual suspects.

Failing that, there are plenty of free alternatives out there.

Microsoft and Google to pick just two. They may not be as good as X1, but beggars can't be choosers.

Following your suggestion I searched and found this:

Try http://www.x1.com/x1/chnl/find/x1_pro_client_3575.exe
As far as I know, last free version.
I downloaded and am now using this version of X1. It looks like it does everything I need. Thanks for the suggestion!!!

BTW, I tried Google and Microsoft -- NO COMPARISON!

I have kept a copy of the last YDS version (1.2 Build 1852je), including the pack for indexing 300 additional extensions. You can find them here (in the text highlighted in green):
(link removed - product owned by Yahoo!)

Probably it is what you are looking for.

Gerard, you are wizard (the good definition)! :) Thank you for your help! I have downloaded that version of YDS with the extension/viewer pack. I tried X1 and Windows Desktop Search, but they just don't do the job I was comfortable with, a few years ago, with the earlier version of YDS, which did everything right (I didn't and don't have any problem with accent/diacritical marks, as would a non-English speaking user). Thanks to you, I am again a happy YDS user. :D

I've had to remove the links to YDS (Yahoo! Desktop Search) as they own the rights to the product and have not provided consent for others to redistribute.

Thanks.

Yahoo! is too busy trying to save its bacon than to worry about things like old deals on desk top search.

Did they ever come up with an alternative to X1? Or do they expect everyine to move over to Google and Microsoft?

I know I'm dragging up an old thread here, but it's related and there's no point starting a new one.

If the deal is now off, why does X1 try to install the Yahoo Toolbar (and include a link to Yahoo) in the application?

Seems a bit strange to me.
