RSS feed Pluging for X1 6.2

Postby yeswork » Sat Aug 23, 2008 6:50 am

Installed this plugin (on fully licensed X1 client

Set plugin to index RSS feed every 120 minutes.

Plugin indexes for about a day. Then fails to update index automatically, cannot update index manually. Have to "clear index" in options menu and re index.

This failure to automatically index and getting "stuck" repeats over and over again.

Not much good as a plugin if every use requires a re-index and resultant loss of old data.

I get the impression that plugins were someone's great idea, but then for whatever reason they were abandoned as a feature.

There was also a Skype plugin, but it doesn't work properly and pretty much any postings about the plugins don't get any offical response (as you've noticed)

Which is a shame, but given that you need to purchase X1 now there's really no incentive for anyone to develop for it.

So sorry, the point of my post is that you've probably found a bug and I very much doubt it'll get fixed...

yeswork,

We've got a new version of the RSS plugin that does a much better job of updating your RSS feed indexes.

1. Download the update here: http://www.x1.com/cs/X1WebServicesPlugin_chg17279.zip
2. Extract the .X1i file to your hard drive
3. Open X1 and click on Tools > Options > Plugin Manager
4. Click on Install New Plugin
5. Navigate to the .X1i file that you saved in step 2 and click Open
6. When asked if you want to replace the existing X1WebServicesPlugin, reply Yes
6. If you already have a source (i.e. RSS feed) configured, you can simply choose No when asked to configure a source

Note: This will cause a reindex of your feed, but should be able to perform updates much better than previous versions.

Please let us know how this new version works for you.

Thanks!

Well, I'm glad to see I stand very corrected!

Cheers Greg/X1.

You stand corrected, I sit bemused.

I updated to the new plugin. Now I can't see things in the preview pane.

It shows the status message "Receive data failed: mismatched tag".

http://www.sciencebusiness.com/wordpres ... &feed=rss2

Another couple show no status, but no body of the message either.

I can now see the material again. This after a complete remove and reinstall of X1 needed for other purposes.

Unfortunately, X1 does not recognise some feeds. For example,

Guess what? Yet more changes.

This time the preview pane has vanished. So I am back to seeing nothing.

But I can add the feeds.

The only thing I did to provoke this change of behaviour was to close X1 and restart it.

Where does X1 hold the information on the preview pane? I want to get it back.

"new" rss plugin

Postby yeswork » Fri Sep 05, 2008 4:05 am

1) Preview broken for me, too.

2) Plugin version listed as 1.3 in Plugin manager. I believe this is the same version listed as before I installed the "new" plugin.

Yes, it looks like something has broken with the preview pane for (most) RSS feeds.

The bug has been reported and our developers are looking into it.

It started OK and then fell over as I added more feed.

I wonder if there is a hole in one of those xml files that X1 seems to create.

I would suggest that we backtrack a version, but that wasn't up to much either.

A further thought, now that you mention it, one thing I did in between adding feeds was to "upgrade" to the new version of the Plugin.

Any idea how loing we should wait?

The bug effectively makes the addin useless.

Should we wait or try to dig out old versions that might work?

Now nearly a week on since you acknowledge the bug, any sign of a mended version of this plugin?

Here are the install steps for the newly updated RSS (beta) plugin.

1. Download the update here: http://www.x1.com/cs/X1WebServicesPlugin_chg17417.zip

7. ** You will need to clear and rebuild (Tools > Options > Indexing > WebServicesPlugin > [plugin name] > Clear Index...) the index for each of your existing RSS feeds (this will not clear your email/file index - only the index for that particular RSS feed.)

Please let us know how this new version works for you.

Er, just one problem, we have all been worrying about the X1WebServicesPlugin.

The link talks about the X1ServerPlugin.

Isn't that a different animal?

I installed it, and it does nothing for the RSS searches. Still no previews.

I installed as per the instructions.

Cleared indexes. Told it to reindex.

Now the "Edit Source" window keeps popping up for RSS feeds that worked just fine in the earlier version.

The status bar says "Receive data failed: Username must be specified in order to get the data".

This for feeds that need no username.

To get the feed to work I have to delete it and start from scratch.

Looks like settings do not stick from earlier feeds.

Where I have managed to get something to index, there is a preview pane again.

"new" RSS plugin - still broken

Postby yeswork » Thu Sep 25, 2008 8:19 am

Installed the latest RSS plugin (after installation is says it is V 1.3)

As others have noted, previously defined feeds did not work. Username password failure on sites that did not require username password.

Deleted all previous feeds. Created new feeds, downloaded content, and saw preview. YAY!

Indexed once, never automatically indexed again. Forcing manua index did not cause update. BOO!

Still broken, same non update to RSS feed/index as before.

yeswork: You're sure you've told X1 to index on a schedule?

My v1.3 plugin is working well now, updating automatically etc.

Cheers,

1.3 Plugin a "one-shot" indexer for me

Postby yeswork » Sun Sep 28, 2008 4:45 pm

Still not working correctly for me.

This RSS plugin gets content and indexes once. Never on schedule.

If RSS content present and I click on options/X1WesServicesPlugin/IndexNow - nothing happens. Still old content.

I have to "clear index" then hit IndexNow for new content to be retrieved.

Even if I have no "schedule" set, the next day I will have to "clear index" before new content will be downloaded, just hitting IndexNow gets no new data.
