X1.exe uses HDD all the time!!! (X1Service.exe RPC problem)

Postby pk_asw » Mon Jan 05, 2009 6:21 am

Hello,

when I disable indexing and I use a tool for monitoring file system activity, I can see that X1.exe opens & reads X1Service.exe all the time !!! Many times per one second !!! Can you please fix it?? This behaviour has many side effects.

If you look at stack stack, you'll notice X1.exe uses RPC mechanics incorrectly.

I know that X1 is mainly a UI application so you don't care much about system internals and you don't care you may conflict with other installed software, but please: fix the problem.

Thanks.

I noticed this also, then rolled back to check 6.2.3 and it also displays the same thing.

Surely this isn't good for battery life on my laptop, is it?

Does this happen if you tell X1 not to index on battery power?

Have you closed X1 completely to confirm that it is the culprit?

No, I have nothing to do with X1, just a user since 2004.

Yep, even if the indexing is turned off manually (i.e. option "Do not index..." is turned off for all providers: Outlook, Files, ...).

Have you closed X1 completely to confirm that it is the culprit?

Yes, HDD activity is between X1 components: X1.exe and X1Service.exe.

Yes, even if X1 is doing nothing (i.e. not indexing) this problem shows itself.

Verify yourself using the Process Monitor tool if you wish.

Someone from X1 - Is this expected behaviour or should a bug be logged on this?

According to my developers, beginning with X1 v5.5.x, the code was effectively "split" between the X1 user interface and the indexing/preview process. X1.exe communicates with X1Service.exe via COM and there are many calls needed between these two processes even when indexing is not taking place. Additionally, we perform some level of caching of portions of the index to allow for faster searching and faster sorting on the columns.

Please also note that Windows should be able to handle tens of thousands of these calls per second and that the packets are very small. Therefore, my guess is, this behavior has been around for 3+ years or so and is not new to the latest build.

With respects to these two statements:
- this behaviour has many side effects...
- conflict with other installed software...

Can you provide specific examples of the side effects and a list of the software with which we may be conflicting? I'd like to go back to my developers with specific problems and/or conflicts.

Thanks for your help with this!
