Version 5.0 is really buggy

Postby wadesmart » Wed Jan 26, 2005 6:06 pm

I got news about the new X1 so I updated and I think it might have been a mistake. I really liked the entire app disappearing up into and off the screen but when I put the mouse to the top of the screen, it would appear. That was easy to use. This new feature, being in the task bar, that takes forever to launch and then, it freezes a lot upon opening.

Then there is the issue of hogging resources. I thought the last version was better than this on manging that.

I have also noticed that Im having difficulty searching within files. After running a full scan of all files (indexing that is), I asked it to find a word in html file and it couldnt find it, even when I told it the exact folder.

I just now noticed that the view pane on the right is having trouble showing text files. Not sure why.

Its just my observation on all of this and it might not be doing this on any one elses pc.

Folks,

I just loaded 5.0 (on top of the previous version), and it crashes every time I try to look at Files, Documents or Pictures. Should I have uninstalled and reinstalled the software? I'll try that just in case.

I hit the Submit button every time a crash window comes up, X1 should have 30 or 40 submittals from me between yesterday and today.

Thanks,

Shawn

I didnt uninstall mine. I just let it do its thing. I think though I might uninstall this latest version and resinstall the one before this.

I have noticed that it seems more difficult to sort for what your looking for. Like before, you could search for a word and then click say the folders and it would group by folders. I cant do that now at all. And I too am still having trouble with it crashing constantly.

Folks,

I uninstalled X1 5.0, removed all directories, and reinstalled it. It indexes to a certain point then shuts down without warning. I restarted it perhaps 5 times, and it shut down after indexing for perhaps 15 minutes each time. The last time it shut down two windows came up:

"Invalid pointer operation"

"Invalid floating point operation"

I have a nearly new Dell 670 Precision computer, dual 3.4 GHz CPU's, 2 GB RAM, 160 GB HD in two partitions, etc.

Anyone have advice? Should I uninstall 5.0, reinstall 4.x, and wait for 5.1?

Thanks,

Shawn

I would reinstall the last 4.x that you have. That is what I am going to do if this doesnt work out. I have another search app that is so so, faster, uses less resources so I am relying on that for now. X1 is a great software but with every release there is this giant step back.

Also have trouble

Postby empirixwhand » Wed Feb 02, 2005 7:41 am

I'm having trouble indexing Outlook. It errors out and asks me to send files to X1. Then it says there is a known problem they are working on and to try and reduce the # folders to index as a work around.

I tried that and it didn't help. Sometimes it indexes to 80+% before it errors out. Sometime it errors out < 1 %.

Also, has anyone experienced problems with suspending the pc while indexing is happening? I think i will roll back to 4 as well.

I can index all of mozilla but I cant search anything. When you enter in a term that I know is there because I just put a file in the folder, it still cant find it.

This release just isnt stable enough to be tested. I tried it on another machine and it was worse. Im done with this new version - I like the older one.

Folks,

After I uninstalled 5.0 altogether and removed directories, I reinstalled 5.0 "clean." I still had the same problems.

I emailed X1 support (have not heard anything back) and waited. After two days X1 gradually started working better for no apparent reason. Maybe the software burns in like some programs did on old Apples and XTs.

For now I can live with occasional sudden shutdowns. I hope the instability problems are solved in a point update.

Thanks,

Shawn

*sigh* I was wrong, looks like X1 5.0 is crashing as often as two days ago. All of the crashes now are insta-gone, with no warnings and no errors. Crashes happen 3 and 4 times a day.

What's frustrating it that it may index files for 90 minutes before it crashes. Then when I restart X1 it seems to have lost most or all of the indexing done before the last crash.

At this rate, 5.0 will never be able to index all of my files. :(

I welcome any suggestions.

Thanks,

Shawn

I've stopped using X1 as email index keeps breaking...

Postby igoldsmid » Wed Feb 02, 2005 2:38 pm

And no response from support or engineering about it despite repeated emails about it for weeks... so I'm using MSN Desktop Search - the recent release has got a lot better... and I'm using Copernic as well... Apart from the index issue the whole product feels too heavy - takes ages to load and I've got a very high spec machine so its not that...

Postby empirixwhand » Wed Feb 02, 2005 2:46 pm

Does aanyone have the URL for downloading version 4.09?

I sent a request to support, but they are not responding. And I can't find an archive on their web site.

I have been wondering why I have not received any replies to my email. I understand that Noel is on vacation but the referral to Jerrald has not brought any answers.

I guess I am lucky because I never received the announcement of the 5.0 release so I am still using the beta.

Jerald responded to my email

Postby empirixwhand » Thu Feb 03, 2005 5:40 pm

They sent me a URL to a new build of 5.0. it maybe the one on the web or it may be pre-release.

It seems to have solved my indexing problems. Something about a corrupt installation download.

Here is the link.

If you are open to giving this a try, please follow these steps:

1) Close X1 and email client

2) Remove any instances of X1 from Add/Remove Programs

3) Download a NEW installer from http://www.x1.com/cs/x1-setup.exe (to make sure you don’t receive a corrupt setup file again.)

4) Reinstall X1.

Version 5.0 (Build 1500zzb) Crashes and Bugs

Postby Jerry » Thu Feb 03, 2005 9:51 pm

Hey everyone,

I wanted to let you all know that we are reading the forums and are generating bug reports from your comments.

I apologize for the lack of response to forum posts.

We believe that many of the problems listed in this and other threads is due to a corrupt or incomplete setup file.

For most people with similar problems, reinstalling X1 using a setup file from http://www.x1.com/cs/x1-setup.exe seems to fix the problems.

(We recommend uninstalling X1 before running this setup file.)

This isn't to say that this will fix every bug, but we do believe this will eliminate many of them.

Your feedback through these forums as well as direct C.S. contact has been immensely useful. We really do appreciate it!

One more note: Please remember that if you have a problem that needs urgent attention, please contact us directly through our support page at http://www.x1.com/support/

Thank you all for your patience!

Didn't work - No Public Folders

Postby philbos » Tue Feb 08, 2005 4:03 pm

I uninstalled and reinstalled. My problem is that V5 isn't showing items from public folders. the alphas and betas didn't have this problem. When I look at the folder list in the tools / options emal or contacts sections I don't see the public folders.

BTW, the uninstall seems to remove the registration code because the install prompted me for it. Please don't do that. I have the registration code in an email and had closed OL as part of the instructions.

*** Since I originally posted, I restarted OL. X1 now sees the public folders and seems to be busy indexing. We shall see.

I just reinstalled X1 but not the beta, the latest 5.0 release. Its 100% better. It searched my email very quickly and found exactly what I wanted.

Ok. Beta is beta. I should remember that.

Still havent figured out how to get it (x1) to hover on the top of the screen yet though. Still wonderful to have it back.

The previous version would drop down from the top of the screen. When you werent using it, it would hide just out of site. And when you would put your cursor at the top of the screen, it would drop down. I just liked that.

X1 5.x fatal error every time

Postby ShawnPike » Wed Mar 16, 2005 4:07 pm

Folks,

This is a sort of status report, and I am exchanging emails with X1 Customer Service. I have a Dell Precision 670 desktop at my day job (XP SP2, new a few months ago), a Dell Inspiron laptop at home (XP SP2, new last July), and a Compaq S4000V desktop at home (XP Home SP 2, 1.5 yrs. old). I have tried several times on each, and I cannot get X1 5.0 to be stable and finish indexing files and email on any of them.

At this point I can only make X1 4.x work. It works fine for what I do, although it crashes if I try to index too many files at my day job. It seems to balk when my index files get over about 3.5 GB altogether.

If X1 5.0 works for every other user, then I am flummoxed as to what could be going on with my CPUs. Just occurred to me, I run PC-cillin and CounterSpy on all these computers; I can't be the only one running these other wares.

Customer Service did give me instructions on how to completely uninstall, including using the killreg utility. I followed the procedures and X1 5.0 runs 2 hours at the most before disappearing off the screen.

Thanks,

Shawn Pike

Hmm... sounds like a Windows program installation problem to me...
hopefully X1 technical support can help sort out this matter for you...

didn't have any problems installing any X1 v5.0 on my notebook computer which was factory pre-installed with Win'XP SP2. Even the Alpha & Beta prototypes of v5.0 installed properly.

(if you're interested, i'm using IBM T42 that was bought in nov'04 was factory pre-installed with SP2, using AVAST antivirus, Adaware & Spybot for anti-spyware, and Spyware Blaster for an additional dose of spyware prevention. SP2 was launched by MS in Aug'04.

Have heard many good things with Counterspy anti-spyware, but have not actually known anyone else who has installed this program on their computer...

Hello Mr. Wong,

Thank you for your reply. A Windows program installation problem, I can believe that. Not on 3 different computers, though. I had no errors or messages during installation. The error messages, crashes, and sudden invisibilities (program disappearing from screen) happened while using the software. X1 Customer Service is corresponding with me.

I tried the 5.1 Beta and had the same crashes and sudden X1 disappearances as I had with 5.0. I could see after 24 hours that it would never complete indexing my files. I uninstalled 5.1 Beta and reinstalled 4.x, now the older version of X1 is happily indexing my email and files.

CounterSpy has been getting some good reviews. I found that it catches many more spywares and adwares than SpyBot S&D, AdAware, and Spy Sweeper. I had these programs all loaded at one for awhile, and by changing the sequence of scanning I saw that CounterSpy was working the best.

Thanks,

Shawn Pike
