Cannot Install X1 v6 3565

Postby comintel » Sat Dec 08, 2007 9:00 pm

"Installation terminated because of a different edition of X1 installed on the computer."

I have removed all traces of prior versions that I can find, including everything that begins with X1 or IX1 in the registry.

I have done all of the steps below.

Still no luck!

What can I do?

XP Users:
--------------
1. Close all open programs including Email and X1 using File > Exit (verify that the X1.exe process is stopped via Task Manager)

2. (If possible) Uninstall X1 using Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs - if prompted to save your current settings/preferences, respond "No"

3. Remove these folders from your system (some of these may not exist):
C:\Program Files\X1
C:\Program Files\Stellant
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Findwell
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\X1 Desktop Search
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temp\X1
(**If you do not see the Local Settings folder, then from Windows Explorer, click on Tools > Folder Options > View and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is selected**)

4. Download and run the following files to remove the X1 registry keys from your system:
http://www.x1.com/cs/x1_killreg.zip

5. Remove any of these files that exist from your system:
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Microsoft\Common\winback_system.dat
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Microsoft\Common\winbackA_system.dat
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Microsoft\Common\winbackB_system.dat
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Microsoft\Common\winbackC_system.dat
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Microsoft\Common\winbackD_system.dat

6. Install X1 - This will require that your index be rebuilt

7. (For paid/registered users) After installing X1, you will want to register the product to turn off the trial mode. To enter the registration code, open X1 and go to Help > Register Product. Enter your code and click "Register".
NOTE: You must have admin rights on your computer to register X1.

There's an older way of manually deleting XEC Registry Keys, albeit it was for v5.5 which was a while ago:

"Try following these manual removal steps:

1. Set X1 to not load at startup.
2. Quit X1 and Outlook, and close the X1 deskbar and systray icon.
3. Remove any X1 items in Start --> Programs and Start --> Programs --> Startup
4. Restart the computer.
5. In the Control Panel, open Administrative Tools and then Component Services.
6. Select Services (Local), right-click X1FileMonitor, and select Stop.
7. Delete any X1 shortcuts on the desktop or in the Quicklaunch area.
8. Delete C:\Program Files\X1
9. Delete C:\Documents and Settings\[User]\Local Settings\Application Data\X1 Desktop Search
10. Delete the Winback files in C:\Documents and Settings\[User]\Application Data\Microsoft\Common\
11. Open the Registry.
12. Delete HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\X1 Desktop Search.
13. Delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\X1 Desktop Search.
14. Delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\X1_Test (if there).
15. Delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\StellentClients if the user doesn't have any other Stellent apps.
16. Delete all X1 keys in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ (X1 SavedSearch.1, X1icons2, X1Service.X1, etc.)
17. Close the Registry.
18. Open Add or Remove Programs, Select X1, and click Remove. (This will run the uninstall script, but basically just gets rid of the X1 entry in Add or Remove Programs)
19. Restart again "

Thanks I just trie those and it did look promising because it did uncover a few more references to X1 which I deleted and rebooted.

However after that, I still get the same error....

Any other ideas would be appreciated.

I tried re-installing the old version earlier and it will not allwo that either ......

I have a similar problem. Can't install X1 on one machine because the uninstall routine, which kicks in when you try to install, says that it can't find the relevant install files to remove the old version.

I'm not trying to install the thing dimwit.

No, I have nothing to do with X1, just a user since 2004.

I got it to install!

Postby comintel » Mon Dec 10, 2007 10:10 pm

I finally got it to install!

I am not sure whether it was disabling the AVG virus shield that allowed it to install or some other minor file cleanups I did...

Thanks to those who helped....
