Indexing PSTs w/o Exchange account

Postby hbae » Wed Sep 11, 2019 5:30 pm

So after using Exchange (on-premises or O365) for 30+ years, I'm not using G Suite. The issue is that I have a lot of PST files that I want to index with X1.

When I had Outlook/Exchange configured, I had the option of choosing "Additional PST files" and X1 indexed it just fine.

I tried adding YahooMail in Outlook, but since it's not an Exchange account, I don't see the option to add PST Files. I only have the "Files" in Data Sources tab.

Anyone know how I can get X1 to index the PST files? Even if PST was listed in the Files (Global Whitelist), which it isn't, it won't pass the size limit of 100MB anyway.

Appreciate any tips or hints

Thnx

Hi,

do you have a Microsoft Outlook client installed? It is needed in order to index PST files.

Yes, as I mentioned, I tried adding Yahoo Mail via IMAP via Oulook.

Hi,

Have you tried to use the "Add PST File" button in the Outlook Email Options dialog?

Thanks. I was trying to avoid doing that since it'll open the PSTs in Outlook. I don't know if I have an option, so I'll arrange the folder and minimize it, I guess.

I was hoping I could just add it in X1. Hmmm, actually, maybe by adding one PST file, X1's dialog will allow me to add PSTs within X1. I'll give that a shot!

Hi,

X1 cannot directly open and index PST files. They have to be mounted in Outlook, and then X1 uses Outlook to retrieve the emails from the PST file.

Thanks Jogy. But I don't think you're understanding my problem. Or I didn't explain it well. I didn't have a choice of adding PST.

You can see the problem here:

However, I opened a case with X1 and they came through. When I got my laptop, I used the default installed Office Outlook and configured it. It worked just fine, as did Word, PowerPoint etc. But X1 Support asked me to open up Control Panel to see if I had the Mail option. See below:

And sure enough, I *didn't* have the "Mail" option. The above picture is *after* I reinstalled O365. And then I reinstalled X1 and I now see this:

So all's good thanks to X1 Support.

You could try this trick, learned here some years ago.

Create a new Mail profile in Windows.

DO NOT ADD ANY EMAIL ACCOUNTS.

Add to it the data files (PSTs) that you want X1 to index. It should pick them up when it starts.

No, I have nothing to do with X1, just a user since 2004.

Thanks. That may have accomplished the same thing, fixing the "corrupted" mail issue. Maybe that, too, fixes X1 not seeing that there is a mail account to index.
