CDS v2.01 single user functions vs XEC

Postby askwong » Mon Oct 30, 2006 12:54 am

Just tried CDS v2.01 and here are some function updates vs XEC v5.6 :

a) CDS just added "All" searching--XEC had this for years.

b) CDS just added "NEAR" boolean search--XEC had this for years.
Still no "PRE" boolean search from CDS, which XEC had for years.

That said, CDS has recently added a number of user friendly features that some XEC users had been asking for a long time (hope X1 is listening):

1. Filename substring search only (no substring search for body text, etc.).
This is a reasonable compromise in terms of indexing performance.

2. Preview Pane: added user-friendly "NEXT" and "PREVIOUS" buttons highlight the next/previous search term.

3. Removable storage indexing (eg: CD-ROM, USB memory sticks, external USB hard drives, etc.).
CDS actually had this feature for years (since v1.0 actually), and hope XEC also re-implement this useful feature, which would be very useful for most users I suspect.

[Edit] Slightly older version XEC v5.2.3 still has this feature. see below:

[/Edit]

4. Music file metadata searching, such as Title, Author, Genre, etc.

Hi - Can you explain how CDS handled USB drives and CD drives? There are no specific option for it? While you can point the indexing at a USB drive (as you can in X1) if you later remove it and CDS indexes it will remove all the entries (as will X1).

Cheers,
Darren.

Just yesterday I had to find a certain presentation file on my client's CD-ROM (not made by me), and it would have been nice to be able to do this...

Anyways, in CDS CD-ROM's are automatically indexed by default.

You can add an external hard drive (eg: E:\ ) by:
Tools, Options, and Add

Wish you can do this with X1... I personally am tempted to stick with XEC v5.2.3 for indexing external HDD's (but still no CD-ROM).

I see yes - but next time it does an index and the CD is not in the drive then I assume it removes all the index information?
