X1 is frustrating me!

For the past couple of weeks, X1 has stopped working. I am referring to X1 ® Enterprise Client Version 5.6.1 (Build 3408) (Created: Fri Dec 15 07:56:18 PST 2006)

I have uninstalled and reinstalled several times, deleting all previous settings.

Even though I have set files indexing to real time, it locks up. Today it stopped after indexing 700 files, previously it reached >300,000 files. When it freezes, it shows the message, "Files: waiting computer in use." This latest message has been displayed for over 12 hours at which time the only program running is a weather station input every 5 minutes. In the past, I have been able to keep this program on as well as Eudora, which updates every 15 minutes.

When I try to stop the indexing and restart, nothing happens.

What now??

mogur2, did you try upgrading to the latest version, XEC v5.6.2 (Build 3418)?

As well as reinstalling, did you also delete the old index files?

When I installed the latest version, I chose the option not to save any previous information. I installed about 9PM last night. Right now it shows that the last index was at midnight with only 692 files indexed but the last file indexed is dated 2/1/07 4:26:31 AM.

I clicked on status bar to choose options. This time I was able to click on the "index files now" but now only 691 files are indexed with the latest dated today at 04:26:21. Previously when set for the real time indexing, it rarely stopped. It is now dead in its track. It is just frozen. Email indexing has many more entries but is not indexing at present.

I have really become dependent on X1, but right now it is useless. BTW, X1 on my laptop is working fine.

I am not sure that installing without saving previous information will clear out indexes. That is more about saved searches, toolbars and the like.

You should tell X1 to clear its existing indexes.

Search the help file for "clear" or "delete index".

It is now indexing >250,000 files but stops with the "Files: waiting, computer in use." message, even though I have the index in realtime option.

You will see that message. It comes and goes, depending on what you are up to.

I see it as X1's way of keeping out of your hair when you are working on a file or your email.

Now that it has started indexing, it will get there eventually.

Was it the index clear that got it going again? It helps to have feedback so that we can see if daft suggestions really do work.

The index clear did help. I also found that the list of hard drives to be indexed some how removed all my drives except the c: drive. I selected them all and it does seem to be working now.

I have no idea how the drives were removed from the active list.

While X1 does seem to be working now it still freezes with the "computer in use" message. I cannot do anything in the files index option to restart it.

I do notice that both the real time index option and the selection above, set for every "10" minutes are both selected.

Is there an option to keep indexing even the computer is in use? How long after I stop working will the indexing restart. Previously X1 usually updated showing a new file within 5-10 seconds. This is not happening now.

The "real time index" option is not related to how much attention X1 pays to your files beyond trying to index things as they change, rather than leaving it to index according to your chosen settings.

The "computer in use" message may be more to do with having to stand aside while you use something like Outlook to deal with your email. I guess that you don't want two programs arguing over who can do what with a file.
